News Summary

Metro Atlanta is bracing for a significant temperature drop as winter storms impact the region. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings affecting millions. Temperatures are expected to plummet into the 30s, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Preparations are underway, including the opening of warming centers for those in need. Residents are advised to stay updated on travel conditions and be prepared for cold weather over the coming week.

Metro Atlanta Faces Winter’s Chill: What You Need to Know!

Hey Atlanta! Grab your jackets and hot cocoa because winter is making a grand entrance! A massive winter storm is currently sweeping through the Midwest, bringing blizzard conditions to places like Kansas and northwestern Missouri. Now, it’s making its move eastward, and we in metro Atlanta are getting ready for a significant drop in temperatures and blustery winds. Buckle up, folks!

Cold Weather Alert!

The National Weather Service is not playing around with their latest updates, issuing winter storm warnings for a staggering 63 million Americans. Yes, you heard that right! These warnings stretch all the way to the east coast, and that definitely includes us here in the Peach State.

Right this moment, we’re experiencing *chilly* and *wet* weather with some gusty winds. If you’re venturing outside, be prepared for winds to whip through the area at speeds of up to 35 mph as the cold air pushes in. Looking at the forecast, we’ll kick off Monday morning with temperatures still hanging out in the 50s, but don’t get too comfy – a cold front is coming in faster than a speeding train!

The Temperature Rollercoaster

By Monday afternoon, you can expect those temperatures to plummet into the 30s, and let’s be real here – with the wind chill, it might feel like the 20s in parts of North Georgia. While we won’t be buried under mountains of snow like our friends up north, there’s a chance we might see some light flurries, especially in northern Georgia.

What’s more, this cold snap isn’t a one-night affair. Buckle in because cold weather is expected to stick around throughout the week. Nighttime lows are set to dip into the 20s, making those warm blankets feel like pure gold. And if you think daytime highs will be any better, think again! We’ll be barely scraping into the 40s during the day.

Next Weekend’s Forecast

And get this – there’s a 40% chance that we might be in for a wintry mix next weekend, particularly from Friday into Saturday, thanks to a developing low-pressure system. Fingers crossed it doesn’t disrupt plans too much!

Traveling? Check Conditions First!

If you’re planning any travels, particularly to areas under snow emergencies (like Washington, D.C.), be sure to check conditions ahead of time. There are events on the schedule for former President Carter, making it ever-so-important to stay updated on travel advisories.

Warming Centers Open for Those in Need

As the cold takes hold, those who need a little extra warmth can find refuge at local warming centers. Frontline Response is stepping up by opening a warming center for women and children at Peace Baptist Church in Decatur starting at 5 p.m. on Monday. There’s also a shelter for men available at Frontline Response’s location on Gresham Road from 8 p.m. on Monday. This includes single fathers, so no one should feel left out in the cold.

Additionally, DeKalb County has opened four 24-hour warming centers starting at 8 p.m. on January 6. Gilmer County is also ready to help by operating a warming center at the Gilmer County Civic Center from January 6 to January 12, offering meals and accommodations for pets!

Get Ready for a Cold Blast!

Let’s not forget about those wind gusts in metro Atlanta! As we gear up for this cold blast, be prepared for isolated stronger gusts that could knock down trees. Overnight lows for the week are expected to remain firmly in the teens and 20s, so please stay safe and keep warm!

This January is shaping up to be chillingly memorable, possibly becoming the *coldest since 2011*. Stay bundled and stay informed, Atlanta!
