Weather Impact Alert Issued as Frigid Conditions Grip Atlanta

Attention residents of Atlanta and north Georgia! Brace yourselves because the weather is taking quite a turn! A Weather Impact Alert has been issued as a blast of Arctic cold sweeps into our area starting today and lasting through tomorrow morning. So, if you’re planning to go out, make sure to bundle up!

Temperature Drop Is No Joke

Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with lows dipping down into the 20s. Yes, you read that right! And don’t forget about the wind! With gusts whipping through at 25-35 mph, it’s going to feel even colder, echoing temperatures that make it feel like the teens and 20s. That’s definitely a reminder that winter has officially made itself at home.

Winter Chill from a Major Storm

This bitter cold is a result of a major winter storm currently impacting the central U.S. and mid-Atlantic regions. Thankfully, the snow-related threats are remaining a bit more distant for us here in Atlanta. Unlike those in Washington, D.C., who are dealing with snowed-in situations, we are mostly concerned with the chill factor!

Warming Centers Open to Help

In light of the chilly temperatures, DeKalb County has stepped up, opening four warming centers starting tonight at 8 p.m. and operating around the clock until further notice. If you’re in Hall County, you can also find temporary warming locations in three community centers open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays. Need overnight accommodations? The Good News at Noon facility will be available from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. as space allows.

Clayton County’s Response

As we brace for these cold temperatures, Clayton County is not sitting idle either! They will be opening additional warming centers from January 7-13, 2025, which will provide some relief as our region faces chillier days ahead.

Wind Advisory and Morning Chills

A wind advisory is currently in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, with gusts expected to reach over 35 mph. So, be prepared for a serious bite in the air. Monday morning will greet us with temperatures in the 20s, and unfortunately, that wind chill will make it feel like the teens. It sounds like a great day to stay indoors with a warm cup of cocoa!

A Hard Freeze on the Horizon

Speaking of temperatures, a hard freeze is anticipated, so make sure to bundle up! The widespread morning temperatures in the teens and 20s will make it essential to layer up and protect yourself from the cold.

More Cold Weather Ahead

But wait, there’s more! This week promises to remain on the chilly side, with another winter weather system potentially moving in from Friday to Saturday. Models are hinting that we could see some freezing rain, snow, and a mix of winter precipitation during this period. If you’re hoping for some festive snow, areas north of I-20 seem to stand a better chance, while others may experience significant ice accumulation.

Uncertainty Looms Over the Storm

As of now, the exact track of the upcoming winter storm remains uncertain, which leaves us all curious about what to expect. Different regions will likely see varied types and amounts of precipitation. Keep your fingers crossed for clear roads and safe travels if you’re headed out!

Stay Warm and Stay Informed

Regardless of the chill in the air, prioritize staying warm and informed about the changing weather conditions. Gather your extra blankets, cozy up, and be mindful of the cold as we navigate these frigid temperatures together!
