July 12, 2024, marks the advent of an unprecedented collaboration between WABE, Atlanta’s affiliate for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and the renowned storytelling platform, The Bitter Southerner. This collaboration will result in a unique radio special, “City Lights Presents: The Bitter Southerner’s All Women Radio Hour.”

Promoting Female Cerativity

This hour-long special is a heartfelt tribute to female creativity. The radio hour was curated in celebration of the eighth issue of The Bitter Southerner. What sets this edition apart is its focus on promoting and acknowledging women’s perspectives and narratives; the entire magazine has been crafted with contributions from women.

The radio show officially premiered on Atlanta’s NPR station, WABE 90.1, on June 28. Listeners can also tune into the special online at WABE.org, BitterSoutherner.com, or through the WABE app.

A Vibrant Variety

Living up to its aim to showcase women’s talent, abilities, and narratives, the special radio hour has curated content from diverse fields like interviews, songs, storytelling, poetry, and even comedy. The content seamlessly blends together to create a unique arts & culture magazine with the vibrancy and energy of a variety show.

The radio hour features powerful voices such as music legend Joan Baez, acclaimed writer Roxane Gay, and Saturday Night Live cast member Leslie Jones, amongst others. The diverse backgrounds of these artists are testament to the radio hour’s efforts to champion women’s contributions in different fields and help their narratives reach a larger audience.

A New Way to Celebrate Women’s Contribution

This special radio hour by WABE and The Bitter Southerner reflects a new pathway to celebrate women’s contributions in various fields across arts and culture. It aligns with WABE’s vision of serving the community by providing high-quality content, and also aligns with Bitter Southerner’s goal to share stories about the American South that have been overlooked or underrepresented in mainstream media.

With this collaboration, the two organizations aim to shine a light on the ceaseless creativity, tireless efforts, and numerous contributions of women, often unacknowledged and underappreciated. This radio hour not only celebrates women but also encourages them to continue making their voices heard and their stories told.

This unique radio hour is a passionate and audacious attempt to bring women to the forefront and applaud their contributions. It re-emphasizes the belief that women’s voices are potent, worth hearing, and must be respected and reckoned with.
