Atlanta was buzzing with excitement this past Tuesday, as neighbors took to the polls for local runoff races, despite some candidates feeling nervous about whether they could rally voters during the holiday season. Guess what? Voters proved they had a lot of holiday spirit! The polls wrapped up at 7 p.m., and everyone was eager to see who would come out on top in the city’s most closely watched seats.
First up, we had the showdown between Eshé Collins and Dr. Nicole Evans Jones. Eshé is not only an Atlanta native, but she also brings a wealth of educational experience to the table, having earned degrees from Spelman College, Georgia State University, and the North Carolina Central University School of Law. Her background as a public school teacher and her leadership role at Georgia State make her a familiar face, especially considering she’s in her third term on the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education for District 6.
On the other side, we have Dr. Nicole Evans Jones. This southwest Atlanta native also boasts impressive credentials, having graduated from Howard University and Clark Atlanta University. As an entrepreneur with leadership experience at various schools, including both Atlanta Public Schools and Metro Atlanta Charter Schools, she’s no stranger to serving her community. Notably, she earned endorsements from former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and the iconic Andrew Young.
In an exciting twist, Nicole Massiah is projected to triumph over Andrew Bell in the County Commission – District 3 Special election. Born and raised in DeKalb County, Nicole is not just a lawyer and business owner; she’s also a well-known figure in her community. Her degrees from Georgia State University and John Marshall Law School add to her impressive résumé.
Andrew Bell, his heart set on service, has a background as a disabled veteran and experience with the FAA. The campaign was closely watched, but it looks like voters are feeling Nicole’s vibes for a brighter future for DeKalb!
Meanwhile, excitement was also brewing in the District 7 race where LaDena Bolton is projected to emerge victorious over Jacqueline Adams. LaDena, who made history as the first in her family to earn a PhD in chemistry, showcases the potential of education. With her roots at military bases across the country and degrees from Savannah State University and Clark Atlanta University, she brings a passion for community development.
Doraville City Council – District 1 Post 2 is shaping up with projected winner Taylor Ray taking the lead against Andy Yeoman. As a relatively new resident and active member of the City Planning Commission, Taylor is ready to put his academic background in engineering to work for the community.
In East Point, Shean Atkins is trending toward victory against Jermaine Wright for City Council – Ward B. With plenty of experience in city planning and zoning, Shean has dedicated two decades to making East Point a better place and has served as a legislative advisor. This election season truly highlights the importance of community experience!
Finally, in Mulberry City Council – District 5, Doug Ingram is expected to beat Michele Sims, while over in Henry County, Michael Price is projected to ace out Vivian Thomas for County Commission – District 4 Special. Doug’s history as a resident and dedicated public servant will help guide his vision for Jacobs County, whereas Michael serves as an interim commissioner and pastor—proving that community leadership can take various forms!
Stay tuned for more updates and results as these local elections promise to reshape the future of our wonderful Atlanta communities!
