Atlanta, GA – The energy in the air was palpable as the Florida A&M volleyball team took on Georgia State this past Saturday, August 31. Fans filled the stands, eager to witness the action-packed match that delivered plenty of close calls and nail-biting moments. Despite a valiant effort, the Rattlers ultimately fell to the Panthers with a score of 3-1 (28-30, 25-21, 20-25, 24-26).
The Rattlers had their work cut out for them, and it showed right from the start of the first set. The game kicked off with an attacking error from Georgia State, allowing Florida A&M to snag an 18-15 lead. It felt like the momentum was on their side, especially after a 5-2 scoring spell. However, Georgia State wasn’t giving in that easily. They countered quickly, snagging six straight points to battle back. The excitement in the first set peaked when it stretched into overtime. Just when it seemed like Florida A&M was going to take the set, Jada Rhodes ignited a spectacular 6-1 run, putting the Rattlers ahead 24-22. But, just when fans thought victory was sweet, Georgia State pulled off a thrilling comeback, winning the first set 30-28.
The second set was a turning point for Florida A&M. With both teams locked at 6-6, Brooke Lynn Watts stepped up with back-to-back aces that shifted the balance in favor of the Rattlers. The energy was vibrant as Watts continued her momentum, capping off the set with three aces and giving Florida A&M an important lead at 17-13. The Rattlers closed out this set, and victory was in sight! Fans were buzzing, feeling their team’s momentum build.
In the third set, Georgia State regained traction. It was a back-and-forth affair with the score even at 11 points on multiple occasions. There were plenty of heart-stopping moments, but the Panthers took the lead for good at 18-17. Despite the Rattlers’ best efforts, they couldn’t reclaim dominance. The set swung in favor of Georgia State, ending 25-20.
The fourth set was yet another tight contest, with both teams tied a whopping 12 times and witnessing seven lead changes. Fans were on the edges of their seats, as the Rattlers battled ferociously. It was a display of grit and determination, but with a bitter pill to swallow, Florida A&M fell short again, losing this set 26-24.
Despite the loss, there were some standout players for Florida A&M. Isis Williams showcased her prowess at the net with a match-high of eight blocks, contributing to the team’s combined total of 16 blocks. Brookelynn Thomas led the offense with a commendable 15 kills, boasting an impressive hitting percentage of .433. And let’s not overlook Bryshanna Brown, who brought in a match-high of 18 digs, showcasing her defensive skills.
Setting up those attackers was Alexandra Koleva, who provided a team-high of 24 assists, helping the Rattlers find their rhythm throughout the match.
The team is determined to bounce back from this tough loss. They will be returning to the Al Lawson Center this Wednesday for a mid-week matchup against North Florida, with the game set to kick off at 5 PM ET. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Rattlers as they look to improve their performance and continue growing as a team.
