Atlanta, GA – In what can only be described as an exhilarating match, the Georgia State women’s soccer team battled Old Dominion on Sunday, October 13, 2024, and ended the game in a 2-2 draw at the GSU Soccer Complex. The atmosphere was electric as fans filled the stands, eagerly cheering on their Panthers!
The game didn’t start off smoothly for Georgia State, as they found themselves trailing 1-0 just before halftime. Old Dominion’s Rhea Kijowski scored the opening goal in the 37th minute, thanks to a smart assist from her teammates Brooke Edwards and Laura Klebek. With the Panthers looking to regroup, the halftime whistle blew and they went into the locker room determined to turn things around.
And turn it around they did! The momentum shifted when Aaliyah Faddoul, a key player for the Panthers this season, scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. This wasn’t just any goal; it was her fifth of the season, and Emily Glenn was right there to provide a brilliant assist that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
But Georgia State wasn’t done just yet! They pressed on and managed to take the lead just a minute before the end of regulation. In the 89th minute, Reese Gordon found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, with an assist from Sunniyah Tucker. The crowd erupted with cheers, filled with hope that they were just moments away from a much-needed victory.
However, in a twist of fate, Old Dominion wasn’t ready to let the match slip away. Seconds after Georgia State took the lead, Kijowski stepped up to take a penalty kick, beautifully slotting it home to tie the match once more at 2-2. The Panthers simply could not catch a break!
Amid the thrilling action, it was also a significant day for Callee Maughon, who made her 89th career appearance, setting a new all-time record for Georgia State. Fans and teammates showered her with recognition, celebrating her dedication and hard work.
As the dust settles after this exhilarating match, the Panthers now hold a record of 1-7-6 overall, including a 0-2-4 mark in Sun Belt play. While a win didn’t come their way this time, the heart and resilience displayed by the team indicate that better days are ahead.
Georgia State will be back in action soon, hosting ULM on Friday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex. Fans are encouraged to show their support and witness more thrilling moments from the team!
