Atlanta, a city known for its rich culture and vibrant communities, is home to some amazing talents. One such gem is Theresa Butler, the founder and owner of Theresa Butler Interiors. With a vision that marries traditional elegance to modern flair, Butler’s designs are not just about aesthetics; they’re about telling a story and creating spaces that spark joy.
Fun fact: Theresa Butler’s journey could have taken her down a completely different path. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, she holds a Master’s degree in nurse anesthesia and spent over a decade working in pediatric care in Atlanta. However, something shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I just realized that life is too short to not pursue what you love,” Butler shared, her enthusiasm shadowing her initial career. “That’s when I took the plunge into interior design. It was my calling ever since I was 12!” Many of us can relate to a groundbreaking moment in life, and for Butler, that was it.
Founded in 2001, Theresa Butler Interiors sprung from Butler’s dream of building meaningful relationships with her clients. “We design custom interiors that are not just visually stunning but also deeply functional,” she explained, illustrating her philosophy that every home has a unique tale to tell.
Each project, according to Butler, is like learning a new chapter in a book. Clients often bring cherished items into their homes, and it’s Butler’s job to weave them together into a cohesive story that reflects their life and interests. “It’s such a joy to see a client’s eyes light up when their vision comes to life,” she said.
Even with her focus on interior design, Butler isn’t stepping away from her roots in nursing anytime soon. In fact, her heart remains with children and families in need. Butler shares the heartwarming story of her recent mission trip to Ghana, where she assisted in surgeries and provided care to those in dire need. “We were there for about two weeks and took care of hundreds of patients. It was rewarding,” she expressed.
Despite her busy schedule juggling both careers, Butler finds fulfillment in giving back to others and stands by her belief that helping those around us creates a stronger community.
What fuels Butler’s creativity? Surprisingly, it’s often the simple beauties of everyday life such as nature, plants, and even the colors around her. “There’s beauty in everything, and that motivates me to create,” she said with a bright smile. She admires designers who aren’t afraid to take risks, mixing patterns and palettes – a nod to her inspirations like Nadia Watts and Corey Damen Jenkins.
Butler also wants to expand her horizons into commercial design in the next five to ten years. “You don’t see many designs that tell a unique story in commercial spaces,” she pointed out.” I want to generate recognition and build a portfolio that speaks to that vision.”
As a black business owner, Butler recognizes the importance of community and support. “People of color need guidance and support to navigate their paths,” she shared passionately. With her firm being relatively small but mighty, Butler loves being accessible to others who may seek her mentorship.
“It’s vital for people to know they are not alone in their journey,” she encouraged, sharing her perspective on the importance of communication and community support.
As Butler eyes her business goals, she wishes to elevate her design projects further, aiming for unique, customized spaces. “The journey won’t always be easy, but you should never give up,” she advised. “Find your support system. When you hit a creative block, talk to those around you who you trust – sometimes they see what you don’t.”
At the end of the day, Butler thrives on the beautiful relationships she’s built in both nursing and interior design. Living in Atlanta, she continues to share her warm spirit and creative flair, reminding us all that every space can tell a story, and every champion has a side worth celebrating.
