A prominent attraction of Atlanta’s lively and diverse music scene, The Masquerade, recently celebrated its 35th year of hosting live music. The establishment has been a beacon for music enthusiasts for decades, with its unique environment and the outstanding talent it continuously brings to the stage.
The Masquerade first welcomed guests in the Old Fourth Ward location, with its infamous triad stages known as Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. Each of these rooms had its own charm and hosted a multifarious preference of music genres. Over the years, it gained a revered status amongst patrons and performers alike, hosting big names like Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, and The Cranberries.
Following the gentrification wave in 2016, The Masquerade was compelled to find a new location in central Atlanta. The management took this chance to bid farewell to their identifiable Old Fourth Ward location with a bang, hosting an extravagant Wrecking Ball festival.
Considerable scepticism surrounded the venue’s transition to the Kenny’s Alley in Underground Atlanta. Fortunately, the relocation worked marvelously, not only for The Masquerade but also for the whole Underground locality, which was craving revitalization.
The venue not only managed to seamlessly settle into its new location, but it also continued to progress by improving the facilities. The establishment recently announced the addition of a fourth room, Altar, which can accommodate 250 people and provides a food service. Earlier, the management added a balcony to the Heaven stage to enhance the experience for patrons. Proper acoustic sound systems were installed in each room to ensure quality sound for every performance.
However, The Masquerade’s core ethos remains unaltered after the change of location. The venue has been successful because it never strayed from its initial vision of fostering new talent and promoting a vast array of music genres. The people a part of The Masquerade still hold a deep-rooted passion for music and constantly strive to orchestrate unmatched experiences for avid concert-goers.
Amid all the changes and progress The Masquerade witnessed, one constant has been Elena de Soto. Starting her journey as an intern, today, she holds the position of a talent buyer, booking the very shows that added the essence to the venue.
De Soto, along with Greg Green – the establishment’s general manager – and other members continue to contribute to the venue’s legacy while carving their own. Their passion and dedication are what make The Masquerade a haven for live music in Atlanta.
Despite the increased competition with the rise of music venues in Atlanta, The Masquerade still stands tall in its glory, and its loyal patrons never fail to express their adoration. With its stalwart staff, top-notch facilities, and unshakeable commitment to good music, The Masquerade is undoubtedly aiming for many more years of success.
