In an exciting update for all music lovers, the city of Atlanta is set to welcome another series of enthralling performances by the Surya Ensemble. This much-anticipated event will take place this summer, offering a unique musical journey for residents and visitors. Known for its remarkable blend of Eastern and Western musical influences, the group is set to perform “Elements,” a fusion of instrumental music, dance, and storytelling.
Founded by Ankit Patel, a virtuoso Shehnai player, Surya Ensemble has made a name for itself with its distinctive blend of music from diverse cultural backgrounds. A Surya concert is not just a musical event. It is an immersive and transformative experience, taking its audience on journeys far and wide, touching their souls with deep emotions, and rejuvenating them with the vibrancy of its performances.
The Surya Ensemble boasts an eclectic mix of gifted musicians. Ankit Patel plays the Shehnai, a traditional Indian oboe, with Michelle Winters on the violin. Nima Ghadiri offers rhythmic support with the Daf, a Middle Eastern frame drum, while Catherine Evergreen woos audiences with her viola. Sean Thrower adds texture with his guitar, and Maria Martynova brings visual finesse with her dance moves.
The group’s newest venture, “Elements,” is an embodiment of the four natural elements – earth, water, wind, and fire. Audiences at the premiere were spellbound by their lyrical narration intertwined with soulful melodies, saying they could “practically smell the fire.” Between the movements, ensemble members also share insights about their respective instruments, further enhancing the audience’s understanding and appreciation of their art.
Atlanta music lovers won’t have to wait long to experience the magic of “Elements,” as the next performances are scheduled for July 11 and August 8 at the city’s premiere Atlanta Theater. The Ensemble plans to stage additional performances every month throughout 2024 and well into 2025.
Tickets for these upcoming events are reasonably priced, starting from $27.50, and can be purchased online at Eventbrite.com. For those who are keen to learn more about the Surya Ensemble and their upcoming performances of “Elements,” they can visit the group’s official website, suryaensemble.com.
