On Sept. 29, the Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta was bustling with activity as it held its annual Sunday in the Park event. This year’s celebration also featured the much-loved Tunes From the Tombs, bringing the community together for a day full of fun and entertainment.
The festival had something for everyone. Multiple live performances kept the atmosphere lively, with various local artists and musicians gracing the stage. Guests could also explore numerous vendors and artists showcasing their crafts and products, making it a perfect spot to find unique items or get inspired by local talent.
A Feast for Foodies
Food enthusiasts had plenty of options to choose from, thanks to the several food trucks and beverage stalls present at the event. The tantalizing smells wafting through the air led attendees to a delightful array of choices, whether it was indulging in a sweet treat or savoring savory cuisine.
Families with children found many activities to keep the little ones entertained. From face painting to various other engaging activities, kids were all smiles as they participated in the festivities. The presence of costumed characters added a touch of whimsy, delighting young attendees and adding to the festive atmosphere.
Established in 1849, the Oakland Cemetery is one of Atlanta’s largest green spaces and is rich in history. Spanning 48 acres today, it started with just 6 acres. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery is not just a final resting place for many but also a cherished city park. Guided tours and storytelling sessions offered visitors a chance to learn more about its storied past and the notable individuals who are interred there.
The first Sunday in the Park was celebrated back in 1978 to mark the cemetery’s 128th anniversary. What began with just a handful of attendees has grown into an event that draws several thousand people each year, demonstrating its significance and popularity within the community.
For those who couldn’t make it to Sunday in the Park, there are more exciting events to look forward to at Oakland Cemetery. The Trick or Trot event will take place on Oct. 5, a perfect occasion for Halloween enthusiasts. Later in October, on the 17th, the cemetery will host Capturing the Spirit of Oakland, which promises to be another engaging event. As November rolls in, the much-anticipated Dia de Muertos festival is scheduled for Nov. 3, bringing cultural vibrancy to the grounds of Oakland Cemetery.
These events are opportunities for the community to come together, enjoy diverse activities, and appreciate the rich history and beautiful landscape of one of Atlanta’s treasured historic sites.
In other news, residents in Conyers have been sharing photos and videos of a large plume of smoke affecting their neighborhoods, following a fire at the BioLab on Monday.
