Storm Warnings in Atlanta: Essential Tips for Home Repairs After a Storm

Storm Warnings in Atlanta: What You Need to Know About Home Repairs

Atlanta residents, brace yourselves! Heavy rain and strong winds from looming storms are on their way, potentially causing damage to homes all across the metro area. With memories of last spring’s chaotic weather still fresh, it’s crucial to understand how to deal with the aftermath responsibly—and to keep an eye out for less-than-reputable contractors.

The Reality of Storm Damage Cleanup

As anyone in a storm-affected neighborhood can tell you, when severe weather strikes, it opens the door for all sorts of contractors who are eager to cash in. Just ask Allison Gentry from Tyrone. Her experience with storm damage last spring left her feeling cornered by persistent door-to-door solicitors.

“Every day, you could count on several people coming to our door,” Gentry recalled. “It felt overwhelming, and I would just say, ‘I’m not interested’ every time.” However, after a storm caused damage to her roof, she reluctantly agreed to let one contractor take a look.

Beware of Fine Print

What started as a simple inspection turned into a lesson in caution. Gentry signed what she thought was a straightforward, one-page document. It wasn’t until later that she discovered the **hidden costs** buried in the fine print on the back side of the paper.

“I had no idea there was all this fine print,” she admitted. “They never show you the backside of the paper! It turns out I owe $3,500.”

Clark Howard’s Advice

According to consumer advisor Clark Howard, many homeowners find themselves in similar precarious situations after a storm. “Those storm chasers are chasing your wallet,” he warned, reminding everyone to do thorough research before making any decisions. Howard emphasized the importance of being cautious, especially when emotions run high after a storm.

“After we have damage from a storm, we want everything back like it was in a second,” he elaborated. “But people take advantage of us in that vulnerable moment.”

Documenting the Damage

Before you jump into any repair work, Howard recommends documenting and photographing all the property damage caused by the storm. This step is essential for insurance claims or if you need to consult a legal professional later on.

It’s crucial to avoid making any significant or permanent repairs until you can get a proper assessment of the damage.” A hasty decision could lead to more headaches down the line, especially if you end up needing to redo work that was done improperly in a rush to fix everything.

Know Your Rights

Also, keep in mind Georgia’s Fallen Tree Responsibility laws. If a tree from a neighboring property falls onto your home, the property owner is typically responsible for the damage, unless it’s clearly established that the tree was unhealthy. Howard reiterated the importance of being aware of these laws to protect yourself from possible liability.

Insurance Claims: Proceed with Caution

When it comes to filing claims with your insurance company, Howard advises only doing so if there’s significant damage. “Slow down, do your research before making these big decisions,” he stressed, reiterating the significance of thoughtful planning during stressful times.

As we gear up for potential storms, let’s remember that while the winds may howl and rain may pour, staying informed and vigilant can make all the difference in protecting your home—and your wallet.
