On a sunny Friday morning, Atlanta came alive with buzzing discussions filled with hope and excitement at the 10th Annual State of the Aerotropolis event. Gathered at the chic Kimpton Overland Hotel, a vibrant crowd of local leaders, dignitaries, and community members couldn’t help but feel the energy surrounding the upcoming projects that promise a bright future for the south side of Atlanta. It’s all about growth, redevelopment, and, most importantly, making the south side a place of opportunity.
The event featured a panel filled with heavy hitters, including the chief operating officers of the Atlanta Regional Commission and Clayton County, along with the enthusiastic mayors of East Point, College Park, and Hapeville. The focal point of the discussion? The exciting and much-anticipated Beltline project, along with the significant federal funds that will help bring this vision into reality. As Hapeville Mayor Alan Hallman passionately stated, “For so long the south side has been at the end of the line. And this project moves us to the front of the line… It’s about time the south side got some recognition.”
The Atlanta Aerotropolis Alliance, which hosted the event, is a public-private partnership committed to igniting economic development around Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The organization’s president and CEO, Shannon James, shared some thrilling updates about the progress being made and the exciting plans ahead.
Shannon James highlighted how the Aerotropolis is forming international ties with countries such as China, France, and Morocco. This partnership expands Atlanta’s reach and places it firmly on the global map. Looking ahead, there’s talk of hosting the Smart Airports & Regions Conference in July 2025, which is set to bring the international community to their doorstep. “We’re going to have the entire international community we’ve been coalescing [come into] our backyard to now see what we’re doing,” James remarked with undeniable enthusiasm.
One of the most exciting announcements made during the event was the allocation of $64.9 million in grant funds aimed at developing over 31 miles of multi-use trails stretching from southwest Atlanta into Clayton County. The Flint River Gateway Trail will be a highlighted aspect of this project, which promises to boost local tourism and provide a recreational haven for residents and visitors alike.
The Flint River, Georgia’s second-longest river, flows beneath the airport, and efforts are being made to reveal its hidden beauty. Beautiful parks and preserves are on the horizon, allowing everyone to appreciate Georgia’s natural wonders. East Point Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham captured the essence of the project perfectly when she noted that this initiative would be “very catalytic for downtown East Point,” allowing her city to become a destination where visitors can enjoy multi-use paths and experience the natural landscape.
As excitement builds, College Park Mayor Bianca Motley Broom emphasized the importance of taking care of our natural resources. “Each city and government entity has a responsibility to take care of the river as it is brought into a more healthy state,” she stated. By working together, they hope to create a healthy and vibrant ecosystem that will benefit their communities, the region, and the entire state.
With all these plans on the horizon, the future of the south side of Atlanta is looking brighter than ever. Residents can look forward to revitalized neighborhoods, enhanced connectivity, and beautiful new trails that will help connect them to nature and the vibrant life around them. It’s more than just development; it’s about building a sense of community and pride in the south side.
