Sinkhole Disrupts Traffic on Lake Forest Drive in Sandy Springs

Sandy Springs, Ga.

Things got interesting on Lake Forest Drive on Thursday when a sinkhole suddenly formed at 4504 Lake Forest Drive, right on the border of Sandy Springs and Atlanta. This has turned one of southern Sandy Springs’ busiest roads into an unexpected no-go zone for what could be a significant length of time.

The sinking event caused quite a scene. The sinkhole, which cropped up near a residential driveway, led to part of the sidewalk collapsing into a drainage area. It also shut down a stretch of the roadway from West Wieuca Road and Chastain Park Avenue all the way to Barbara Lane. Unfortunately, as of the morning of September 27, there have been no work crews on site, suggesting that repairs might take some time to kick off.

Traffic Detours in Place

With Lake Forest Drive being closed, drivers are being redirected to other routes. Detours include Roswell Road (Ga. 9) and Powers Ferry Road. As frustrating as this can be for daily commuters, it’s a necessity until the road is safe again.

One of the affected property owners, Edwin Ades, mentioned that Sandy Springs emergency responders have been quite diligent about the situation. He recounted that work crews have visited a couple of times to inspect the roadway, and he appreciates their responsiveness and how promptly they closed the road to avoid any mishaps.

City Officials Take Action

The nature of the sinkhole is somewhat complex because it impacts both Sandy Springs and Atlanta due to its location. Ades also noted that both Atlanta and Sandy Springs city crews have surveyed the site.

Chief Kenneth DeSimone of the Sandy Springs Police Department even visited the area himself to assess the damage firsthand. However, despite their efforts, there’s still no clear timeline for when the thoroughfare will be reopened. One neighbor, who lives just a few houses north of the incident, predicted that stabilizing and reopening the road could take several days. It’s safe to say that patience will be key for everyone involved.

Community Impact

The sinkhole is certainly causing more than just a traffic hassle; it’s also impacting the community’s daily routine. Local residents and commuters who rely on Lake Forest Drive are having to reorganize their travel plans, which isn’t always the easiest thing to do at short notice.

But in true community spirit, the residents seem to be taking it in stride. They understand the necessity of the situation and are appreciative of the emergency responders and city officials who are working to manage the problem.

What’s Next?

As of now, there is no specific estimate for when Lake Forest Drive will be back to normal. The best thing residents can do is stay updated and follow the detour routes to ensure optimal safety and traffic flow.

We will definitely keep an eye on this situation and update as more information becomes available. In the meantime, let’s all drive safely and look out for each other while navigating these detours.
