Atlanta, GA — Well, folks, it looks like we’re in for some stormy weather! Due to the impending effects of Hurricane Helene, school districts across the Atlanta area have announced that classes will be canceled on Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27. Parents, students, and teachers, please take a moment to read this update on how the storm is impacting local schools.
In a bid to ensure the safety of everyone, Atlanta Public Schools has decided to close its doors for two days. In a statement released by the district, they mentioned that employees at the district office will be working remotely for the remainder of the week. While school is out, the district will provide an update on Friday afternoon regarding the status of activities planned for Saturday, September 28. So if you had something planned for the weekend, keep an eye out for any announcements!
Not far behind, DeKalb County Schools has taken similar precautions. They confirmed that all schools within the district would be closed on Thursday and Friday, with the Superintendent, Dr. Devon Q. Horton, stating that the well-being of students, staff, and families is their top priority. In fact, they’ve canceled all school-based, extracurricular, and athletic events during this time to keep everyone safe.
If you’re living in Decatur, there’s no need to worry; the City Schools of Decatur are already on fall break this week, so their district offices will also be closed on September 26-27. It seems like the kids in Decatur will have a little extra time to enjoy their break without storm worries!
Not to be left out, Fulton County Schools will also be shutting down for football practices and activities on Friday. On Thursday, September 26, after-school events and extracurricular activities, including extended day programs, clubs, and athletic seasons, have been canceled. Parents are encouraged to pick up their kids by the standard dismissal time or make alternate arrangements.
So, what’s causing all this ruckus? Tropical Storm Helene has been officially upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, with predictions pointing toward sustained winds reaching as high as 130 mph! As Helene moves through Georgia, officials expect to see hazardous weather conditions including high winds and potential power outages. Schools and families are being advised to stay safe during this impending storm…
Now that classes are closed, don’t let that homework pile up! While there’s no expectation for remote learning this week, it’s a great opportunity for students to catch up on any lingering assignments. Just keep in touch with your teachers for any updates on schoolwork.
This is a developing situation, and schools will continuously assess conditions leading up to the weekend. As we get closer to Saturday, updates will be shared to help families understand whether their weekend plans are on or off. So be sure to check in for any new announcements!
As we brace ourselves for possible weather impacts, let’s make sure to support each other and stay safe. Take care, and remember to think ahead and prepare your home for storms, like stocking up on essentials and making a storm plan. Here’s hoping Hurricane Helene passes through quickly and that everyone stays safe!
