Sad Farewell to Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson After Courageous Battle with Cancer

Sad Farewell to Georgia Labor Commissioner, Bruce Thompson

Atlanta, GA – The state of Georgia recently took a moment to honor a dedicated public servant, Bruce Thompson, who passed away at the age of 59 following a courageous bout with stage IV pancreatic cancer. As an act of tribute and fond remembrance, flags across the state were ordered by Governor Brian Kemp to fly at half-staff last Saturday. This heartfelt gesture was made to acknowledge Thompson’s remarkable dedication and the impact he had on both his colleagues and the people of Georgia.

His Dedication and Service

Thompson’s diagnosis came to light in March, not long after he took the helm as the Head of the Georgia Department of Labor in January 2023. Before undertaking this position, he showcased an exemplary career serving in the U.S. Army National Guard and committing a commendable 10 years to the Georgia State Senate. His work for Georgia was characterized by a commitment to transparency, responsiveness, and fiscal responsibility, attributes that Gov. Kemp noted in his executive order. The Governor emphasized that Thompson’s work ethic, integrity, and legislative experience were fundamental in effectively serving Georgia’s workers and employers.

In his public address, Kemp expressed it was both “fitting and proper” to honor Bruce Thompson’s service by lowering the flags on all state buildings and grounds, illustrating the respect and admiration that resonated throughout the state Capitol and beyond.

Remembering a Life Well-Lived

A service to celebrate his life took place in Cartersville, marking a solemn day filled with reflections of Thompson’s substantial contributions to the state. According to arrangements listed by Dignity Memorial, Thompson’s family organized a service at the Church at Liberty Square at 1 p.m., followed by a gathering to honor his life and achievements at 3 p.m.

The agenda was thoughtfully planned to not only mourn the loss but also to celebrate the dynamic life of a man who touched many lives through his public service and advocacy for the people of Georgia.

The Legacy Continues

The legacy left behind by Bruce Thompson resonates deeply in the halls of Georgia’s State Senate and in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege to collaborate with him. He will be fondly remembered not just for his advocacy or governance but for being a guiding beacon in the lives of those he served. Transparency, responsiveness, and an unwavering dedication to ethical standards have set a remarkable precedent for those who walk in his footsteps.

As Georgia takes a moment in stillness, the echoes of Thompson’s profound influence remind us not merely of loss but of the vibrant legacy upon which his memory stands. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he greatly enriched.
