Recently, Republicans at Trump’s Atlanta rally found time to mention Laken Riley, the unfortunate Georgia student who was murdered earlier this year. This event came right after an Athens judge blew the horn about the trial date for Jose Antonio Ibarra, the 26-year-old guy cops believe committed the crime. The decision comes for former President Donald Trump, who took to the stage at the Georgia State Convocation Center, using the name Laken Riley in front of a stadium full of people.
The Complicated Connection to Immigration
Trump has been buzzing about immigration for the longest time. The Atlanta rally, marking his first visit to Georgia’s capital since the June debate that swung things up for President Joe Biden, was no exception. For many in Georgia, Riley’s tragic story has become a key point in the conversation about immigration, as her alleged killer is an immigrant.
A Closer Look at Jose Antonio Ibarra
Ibarra, originally from Venezuela, lived in Athens after entering the U.S. illegally. He got nabbed a day after Riley’s death. Cops don’t believe Riley knew Ibarra, who faces headline-grabbing charges including murder, attempted rape, and aggravated battery.
Aside from attacking Riley while she jogged at the UGA intramural fields complex, it’s believed that Ibarra also tried to force himself on her. Add a peeping tom charge to the indictment list, as Ibarra allegedly spied on another UGA student. The jury will decide on his fate come November, with the possibility of life in prison without parole if he’s found guilty.
Since Riley’s tragic death, public backlash has led to a recall effort against Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz and accusations of lax safety on the UGA campus. The charge is that Athens operates like a “sanctuary city,” with millions of dollars poured into beefing up safety measures around the campus.

Several Republicans took the stage ahead of Trump. They included Georgia Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Mike Collins, plus Sen. J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate. They rallied voters to take action in November and had a few choice words about Laken Riley.

An Atlanta-based real estate agent, Abreu slammed President Biden’s immigration policies despite her own parents being Haitian immigrants. Abreu argued that these policies were a green light for attacks against American citizens.

Rep. Mike Collins mentioned his responsibility for the Laken Riley Act, a resolution that would call for the Department of Homeland Security to take in any migrant guilty of burglary or theft.
