Atlanta is greeting fall in the most unexpected way—by setting new heat records! Even though Sunday marked the official start of autumn, the city seems to be holding onto its summer weather for just a bit longer. In fact, Sunday’s high temperature of 97 degrees smashed the previous record of 95 degrees set way back in 1940.
Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan mentioned that Monday’s forecast is also looking pretty hot. He expects temperatures to reach 94 degrees, which would tie the old record for September 23. It’s been so toasty that you might be thinking it’s one of the hottest years ever—and you wouldn’t be far off the mark!
Believe it or not, there have already been 70 days this year where the temperature hit at least 90 degrees. To put it in perspective, last year had 59 days of 90-plus-degree heat, and the yearly average usually falls around 47 days. So yes, it’s hotter than usual, without a doubt.
But if you’ve been desperately waiting for some cooler weather to break out those cozy sweaters and pumpkin lattes, stay hopeful—relief is on the horizon! Starting Wednesday, we can expect cooler and rainier weather to roll in. It looks like fall will finally feel like, well, fall.
The start of this week is still going to feel like a scorcher. Today, we are poised to deal with another day climbing into the mid-90s. So while it might be tempting to haul out your autumn wardrobe, you might want to stick with those summer outfits a bit longer.
Although it’s been unusually hot, remember to stay hydrated and take the usual precautions to avoid heat stress, especially if you’re spending significant time outdoors.
According to forecasts, as mid-week approaches, temperatures will begin to dip, and rain showers will start making their entrance. It’s a refreshing change that many of us are eagerly anticipating. Cooler weather not only provides a break from the unrelenting heat but also sets the perfect backdrop for all those fall activities we love.
So there you have it, folks! While the summer-like heat wants to hang around for a bit longer, fall-like weather is just around the corner. Here’s hoping you can enjoy some nice, crisp fall air soon, without having to crank up the AC.
Stay safe, and prepare for that long-awaited cool down!
