ATLANTA — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff Announces New Legislation Aimed at Overhauling USPS Leadership
In an effort to address ongoing issues with mail delivery delays across the country, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has announced new legislation that could significantly change how the United States Postal Service (USPS) is overseen and how its leadership is selected.
Currently, the Postmaster General has no term limit and is selected by the USPS Board of Governors without requiring confirmation by the U.S. Senate. The proposed legislation, known as the Postmaster General Reform Act, aims to change that. If passed, the bill would impose term limits on the Postmaster General and require Senate confirmation for the appointment.
“The elected representatives of the people need a role in the selection of this high federal official whose duties have such an impact on our constituents,” Ossoff stated in his announcement of the legislation.
The announcement of the Postmaster General Reform Act comes amid significant delays that have been affecting residents nationwide, including those in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia. In one instance, delays at the Palmetto facility in Georgia have been so severe that mail literally piled up.
In March, Congress members pressed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to address these ongoing issues, with both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives demanding answers regarding the delays. Despite DeJoy’s testimony before the Senate in April and assurances from the USPS that they have improved delivery times, customer complaints continue to roll in. These complaints include missing crucial legal documents such as court and eviction notices that people say never arrived.
As the November elections approach, the reliability of mail delivery has become an even hotter topic, especially concerning the timely delivery of absentee ballots. Questions remain on whether absentee ballots will be delivered in time for voters and when they’re sent back to election offices for counting.
While the USPS claims improvements, the ongoing complaints suggest a disconnect between what is reported and the actual experiences of customers. The proposed Postmaster General Reform Act is intended to bring tighter oversight and a more direct selection process, potentially leading to improved accountability and efficiency within the USPS.
This legislative effort reflects a broader intention to ensure that the position of Postmaster General is held by someone who is accountable not just to a board but also to elected officials and, by extension, the public. If Ossoff’s bill makes its way through both chambers of Congress, it could mark a significant shift in how this crucial federal agency operates.
As delays persist and the stakes get higher with approaching elections and crucial postal needs, all eyes are on Congress to see if this new legislation will pass and bring about the much-needed reforms to the United States Postal Service.
