In the bustling city of Atlanta, there’s been a significant shift in leadership at the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). As the transit authority bids farewell to Chief of Staff Melissa Mullinax after six years of dedicated service, two familiar faces are stepping up to fill critical roles during this transition. Steven Parker and LaShanda Dawkins have been appointed to key interim positions, and they’re ready to keep the momentum going.
First up is Steven Parker, who currently serves as the Assistant General Manager of External Affairs. Parker has an impressive background that’s sure to contribute to his new role. Before joining MARTA, he made waves as the Chief Innovation Officer for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There, he focused on fostering creativity and innovation throughout the agency, demonstrating his ability to think outside the box.
Parker’s career doesn’t stop there; he has also been the General Counsel for Storybrand, a notable brand and marketing firm. Additionally, he played a pivotal role as the Political Director for the Jon Ossoff U.S. Senate campaign. With such diverse experiences under his belt, Parker is expected to bring fresh ideas and new energy to MARTA’s operations.
Next in line is LaShanda Dawkins, who has been serving as the Assistant General Manager of Labor and Employee Relations. Dawkins boasts over 18 years of dedicated experience at MARTA, making her a valuable asset during this transition. She has served as a key advisor on human resources and labor matters, especially during some of the Authority’s most significant expansions in 40 years. This extensive knowledge will surely guide her in her new role as interim Chief Administrative Officer.
Before her long tenure at MARTA, Dawkins held important legal positions, including Assistant General Counsel for the City of Jacksonville and General Director of Policy and Compliance for Duval County Public Schools. Her wealth of experience in both legal and administrative roles gives her a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for MARTA.
MARTA’s leadership expressed confidence in Parker and Dawkins, stating, “Steven and LaShanda have demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout their careers, and we are confident they will continue to drive MARTA forward during this transition.” Their immediate assumption of interim roles means that the organization can maintain stability and progress as they navigate this change.
The appointments come at a vital time for MARTA as it looks to continue enhancing public transit services and infrastructure in the Atlanta area. With Parker and Dawkins at the helm, there’s a sense of optimism about the direction MARTA is headed. They are not just filling positions; they are stepping into leadership roles that influence the daily lives of thousands of Atlantians who rely on public transit.
With Parker and Dawkins onboard, MARTA remains poised to carry on with its mission. The Authority is dedicated to serving the community, improving the rider experience, and maintaining its vital role in Atlanta’s transportation network. As they embark on this journey of leadership, there’s a palpable sense of enthusiasm and determination to build an even brighter future for MARTA.
All eyes will be on Parker and Dawkins as they start their interim leadership journey at MARTA. Their backgrounds and commitment are promising, and it will be exciting to see how they steer the transit authority into the next chapter.
