Over the weekend, Atlantans witnessed a special event centered around the fascinating history of Uncle Nearest, a premium whiskey brand honoring the legacy of the first-known African American Master Distiller, Nearest Green. The Atlanta stop of author Fawn Weaver’s book tour was hosted at the Hyatt Regency, a beacon of hope in downtown Atlanta.
Fawn Weaver, a bold CEO and author, embarked on this journey unveiling the captivating story of Nearest Green in her book “Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel, His Master Distiller Nearest Green, and the Improbable Rise of Uncle Nearest.” She was joined by Victoria Eady Butler, the Master Blender of Uncle Nearest and the great-great-granddaughter of Green.
Through tales of perseverance, ambition, and struggle, Weaver elucidated Green’s journey. From becoming a mentor to Jack Daniel to being known and respected as a Master Distiller, Green’s story is an integral piece of America’s whiskey lore.
From far and wide, enthusiasts congregated to hear the once-overlooked history. The event was not just about the brand’s journey but also about learning the intricacies, the struggles, and the triumphs of the spirits industry.
Weaver’s recount of the challenges she faced in building Uncle Nearest increased the attendees’ admiration for this pioneering brand. In her words, “You literally have to elbow in no matter what.”
Weaver’s strategic acquisition of crucial assets, including the original Jack Daniel’s distillery, fortified her position in the market and kept the narrative of Nearest Green alive.
Participants ranged from avid whiskey fans to individuals captivated by the astonishing tale of Nearest Green. Kyle Thomas Smith, a young bourbon enthusiast, was eager to learn more about the brand and be inspired.
Smith’s admiration for the brand grew substantially upon understanding the backstory and comparing Uncle Nearest whiskey with other brands. He found the event an excellent opportunity for personal growth and expanding his knowledge of Uncle Nearest.
Butler stepped up to guide the attendees through a fascinating tasting event, deeply involving the audience by describing the proof and finish of each type. The event left a lasting impression, not just because of the delicious tastings but also due to the thread of history intertwined with each sip.
Uncle Nearest has come a long way since its establishment in 2017. As the first significant spirits company led by a black woman, Uncle Nearest has broken multiple barriers in the industry.
Currently holding a Guinness World Record for signed copies of “Love & Whiskey,” Weaver’s tireless efforts in telling the story of Nearest Green garnered significant attention, making the book immensely popular.
By 2018, Uncle Nearest had expanded to twelve countries, cementing itself as a bestselling black-owned spirit. In 2019, the brand celebrated another landmark moment with the opening of its first distillery.
Through the relentless determination to carve out a place for Uncle Nearest in the industry and the dedication to keeping the legacy of Nearest Green alive, Weaver, with her team, has left a significant mark on the spirit industry’s landscape.
