Morehouse College celebrates its 158th anniversary by breaking ground on a new residence hall on February 21, 2025. This marks the first construction since 2003 and is part of a $500 million campus modernization initiative. Concurrently, Georgia Tech is also launching a similar project to support its first-year students, highlighting the ongoing investment in higher education facilities.

Morehouse College Celebrates 158 Years with New Residence Hall Construction

In a momentous occasion, Morehouse College is celebrating its 158th anniversary by breaking ground on a brand-new residence hall on February 21, 2025. This significant milestone marks the first construction undertaken by Morehouse since the year 2003, promising exciting changes for the college community.

First Steps Toward a Modern Campus

The new residence hall is a crucial component of the ambitious $500 million Campus of the Future capital campaign, aligned with the Making Men of Consequence initiative aimed at modernizing and expanding the historic campus. Morehouse has already made impressive strides, having raised over $320 million for this transformative campaign. Within this, a dedicated $170 million is earmarked specifically for the construction of the new residence hall.

Envisioned to be a five-story structure, the new residence hall will provide 324 beds crammed into a spacious layout of over 88,000 square feet. The design will feature an array of amenities aimed at enriching students’ living experiences, including a green space, a cozy lounge area, a technology room, research labs, and a bustling welcome center.

A Boost for Campus Amenities

In addition to the residence hall, Morehouse will also benefit from a generous $20 million grant from the Woodruff Foundation to support the construction of an expansive 58,000 square foot campus center. This new center is designed to feature a state-of-the-art dining hall alongside versatile spaces for student gatherings and community activities. However, Morehouse is still on the lookout for an additional $28 million to get the campus center project off the ground.

The initiative aims to provide a top-tier learning and living environment that can enhance the university’s competitive edge. As the collegiate landscape evolves, Morehouse is proactively ensuring it stays at the forefront of modern educational facilities.

Georgia Tech Follows Suit with New Student Residence

Coinciding with Morehouse’s groundbreaking efforts, Georgia Tech has also initiated a significant construction project. On March 5, 2025, the institution broke ground for its very own Curran Street Residence Hall, marking the first traditional residence hall to be built in almost 50 years. This is a strategic move to cater specifically to first-year student needs.

Modern Living for a Growing Student Body

The new residence hall is set to accommodate an impressive 862 beds over eight residential floors. Among its numerous amenities, students can expect a 24-hour automated market, well-appointed study rooms, innovative e-gaming spaces, and an extensive fitness center. The facility will be conveniently situated along Northside Drive, dismantling an existing surface parking lot.

The design plan includes double-occupancy rooms that will feature communal kitchens and collaborative learning spaces, fostering community and camaraderie among students. This new hall is part of Georgia Tech’s strategic plans to meet an anticipated surge in first-year student enrollment over the next decade.

Investment in Future Learning Environments

The cost of the Georgia Tech residence hall is estimated to be around $117 million, with an expected opening date in August 2026. As both Morehouse and Georgia Tech embark on these transformative projects, their focus remains centered on enhancing the student experience and upgrading their campuses to better accommodate growing enrollment and modernization demands.

As both institutions actively invest in their futures, the changes underway promise to set a new standard for student living and learning environments in the region.
