From January 8 to 20, 2025, Atlanta will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with various events honoring his ideals. This year’s theme, ‘Mission Possible,’ focuses on freedom, justice, and democracy. Highlights include a book signing with Professor Angela Farris Watkins, a Global Youth Summit exploring contemporary issues through King’s teachings, and the MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards Gala with performances. This vibrant week promises to engage communities in ongoing movements for social justice.
Atlanta, the heart of the civil rights movement, is getting ready to host a series of events to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from January 8 to January 20, 2025. This year’s observance marks the 40th annual celebration, and what makes it even more special is that it coincides with what would have been Dr. King’s 96th birthday.
This year’s theme, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365,” emphasizes the ongoing need to fight for social justice, freedom, and democracy, all values that Dr. King passionately advocated. The King Center is taking the lead in organizing this jam-packed week of events, which will include a mix of in-person and virtual activities, making it easy for everyone to participate from anywhere.
The festivities will kick off on January 8 with an exciting book signing and reception featuring the talented Professor Angela Farris Watkins. She will be signing her book, “Love Will See You Through: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Six Guiding Beliefs,” at the MLK, Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center. Attendees will need to RSVP for this engaging start to the celebration.
One standout event is the Global Youth Summit, which will dive into contemporary topics such as artificial intelligence and democracy—all through the lens of Dr. King’s nonviolent principles. Registration is already open, so young minds eager to learn how to apply these vital topics through Dr. King’s teachings should jump on this opportunity!
The observance culminates in a commemorative service on January 20 at 9 a.m., broadcast live for everyone to see. This service will be a time for reflection and remembrance, truly embodying the spirit of Dr. King. Additionally, the annual MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards will be presented, recognizing individuals and organizations dedicated to leadership and social justice. The awards gala boasts an impressive lineup of performers, including MaKenzie Thomas and Jennifer Holliday, making this an unforgettable night.
Honorees for the awards include Black Voters Matter, which will receive the Beloved Community Civic Leadership Award, and PSYONIC, recognised for its technological innovation. Other notable mention includes Jenifer Lewis receiving the Yolanda D. King Higher Ground Award, and the environmental justice efforts of Serenbe.
Throughout the week, there will also be various initiatives such as workshops, community service projects, and cultural performances, all aimed at fostering a deep understanding of nonviolence, which is the cornerstone of Kingian philosophy. The King Center also promotes this philosophy through its Nonviolence365® program, helping participants put the teachings of Dr. King into practice.
Notably, the observance has garnered strong support from corporate partners like Delta Air Lines, Kia, and Coca-Cola, demonstrating a community-wide commitment to honoring Dr. King’s legacy. Furthermore, the Coretta Scott King Rose Gallery has partnered with Microsoft to educate visitors on Coretta Scott King’s integral role in civil rights.
In an exciting move, MARTA will provide special bus service honoring both Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, featuring designs that celebrate their monumental contributions to the community and civil rights.
For those wanting to dive deep into this vibrant observance, the King Center’s website offers a complete schedule of events, as well as ticket information and other ways to get involved. This celebration is a fantastic chance to not only honor the past but also to engage actively in the ongoing movement for social justice.
