Vibrant nightlife showcasing the cultural significance of Magic City in Atlanta's entertainment scene.
Starz is set to premiere ‘Magic City: An American Fantasy,’ a five-part docuseries delving into the cultural legacy of the iconic Atlanta strip club Magic City. Produced by DreamCrew Entertainment and executive producers including Drake, the series highlights the club’s significance in hip-hop culture. The docuseries will explore the influence of Michael ‘Mr. Magic’ Barney and the women of Magic City, alongside its celebrity connections and ties to the Black Mafia Family. With never-before-seen footage and interviews, ‘Magic City’ is anticipated to be an essential exploration of Atlanta’s nightlife.
Atlanta is buzzing with excitement as Starz prepares to unveil its latest offering in reality television, the five-part docuseries “Magic City: An American Fantasy.” This gripping series will delve deep into the legacy of the famed Atlanta strip club Magic City, a corner of nightlife that has played a significant role in shaping the culture of hip-hop.
Set to hit screens later this summer, the docuseries is the brainchild of DreamCrew Entertainment, co-founded by the well-known rapper Drake, alongside Jermaine Dupri and actress Jami Gertz. With an impressive lineup of executive producers—including Cole Brown, Bayan Joonam, Devin Amar, and Alex Kaplan—the series promises a captivating look behind the velvet ropes of Magic City.
At the heart of the docuseries is the story of Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney, the visionary founder of Magic City. The series aims to shine a light on the women who have not only danced there but have also contributed to the complex mystique surrounding the establishment. It’s not just a strip club; it’s a cultural landmark.
Over the years, Magic City has attracted an impressive roster of celebrity guests, including the likes of 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi. Recognized as the “Black Studio 54,” this venue has launched numerous hip-hop careers and influenced countless music hits, making it a vital part of Atlanta’s rich musical history.
The series was initially introduced at the SXSW festival in 2024, but it has taken some time to find its permanent home on Starz. The production team faced the challenge of depicting nudity in a respectful manner, ensuring the series remains engaging without crossing any lines. The president of original programming at Starz expressed anticipation for a riveting behind-the-scenes exploration of this vibrant slice of Black culture.
As the docuseries unfolds, viewers can expect to gain an appreciation for Magic City’s extensive influence on hip-hop culture and Black identity over nearly four decades. The club has not only served as a backdrop for countless events but also has ties to the notorious Black Mafia Family (B.M.F.) drug cartel, adding another layer of intrigue to its already storied history.
Magic City also gained attention during the 2020 political campaign when Stacey Abrams used it as the site for a critical get-out-the-vote announcement, further intertwining the club’s legacy with significant cultural moments. Producer Jami Gertz shared her personal connection to the Barney family, highlighting the club’s rich tapestry of history and its cultural significance.
Directed by Charles Todd and produced by Scheme Engine, a BIPOC-owned studio committed to diverse storytelling, this docuseries is poised to feature never-before-seen footage, revealing interviews, and untold stories that illustrate the astonishing rise and enduring impact of Magic City within the music industry.
As the premiere approaches, “Magic City: An American Fantasy” is set to be an unforgettable exploration into the heart of Atlanta’s nightlife and its profound connection to hip-hop culture.
