It’s been a tough few weeks for the community following the heartbreaking Learjet 55 crash that occurred on January 31, 2025, in Northeast Philadelphia. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a preliminary report that reveals some alarming findings about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
Shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport at 6:06 PM, the Learjet soared into the sky but quickly met a disastrous fate. Witnesses reported a massive explosion and fireball as the aircraft plummeted into a bustling residential and commercial area. Sadly, all six passengers aboard, including an 11-year-old pediatric patient and her mother, lost their lives, along with one individual on the ground. This incident also left two dozen others injured—many of them seriously—including a brave 10-year-old boy who tried to shield his sister from flying debris.
One of the most concerning aspects of the NTSB’s preliminary report is the revelation about the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). It turns out that the CVR wasn’t functioning and likely hadn’t been recording for several years. This significant loss of data means investigators are facing an uphill battle to piece together what happened during the final moments of the flight. Just imagine how crucial that information would have been—especially given that no distress calls were made to air traffic control before the crash occurred.
The wreckage caused extensive damage to more than a dozen homes and businesses, with debris strewn across a vast area of nearly 500 yards long and 300 yards wide. With an overcast ceiling at just 400 feet above ground level and visibility of six statute miles, the flight crew likely encountered challenges. Eyewitnesses indicated that the aircraft initially climbed to an altitude of 1,650 feet before veering sharply to the left and crashing, raising concerns about possible pilot disorientation.
