Kitty Dukakis, A Resilient Advocate for Change, Passes Away at 88

Kitty Dukakis, the beloved wife of former Massachusetts governor and 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, has sadly passed away at the age of 88. Surrounded by her loving family, she left the world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of fierce advocacy for mental health and women’s rights.

Born as Katharine Dickson on December 26, 1936, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Kitty dedicated much of her life to social causes, often sharing her personal struggles to help others open up about their challenges. Her journey was one of profound resilience and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.

Impactful First Lady

As the first lady of Massachusetts, Kitty served alongside her husband during his three nonconsecutive terms from 1975 to 1979 and 1983 to 1991. During this time, she was not just a supportive spouse but an active participant in advancing social issues. She passionately advocated for gender equality in state politics, pressing her husband to appoint four women to his cabinet—an unprecedented move at the time that marked a vital step toward inclusivity.

Kitty also threw herself into her husband’s presidential campaign in 1988, rallying support and showcasing her impressive ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Regardless of the challenges they faced, the Dukakis partnership, which lasted over 60 years, was a beacon of strength. Together, they raised three children—John, who was adopted by Michael, and two daughters, Andrea and Kara—instilling in them the values of compassion and advocacy.

Facing Personal Struggles

Throughout her life, Kitty battled addiction, openly discussing her experiences with alcoholism and dependence on amphetamines that began at a young age. The fight to reclaim her life was highlighted in 1989 when she was hospitalized due to alcohol-related health concerns after drinking rubbing alcohol—a dark moment that she transformed into a catalyst for change.

In 1990, Kitty published a candid memoir, “Now You Know,” chronicling her struggles with addiction and her complex relationship with her mother, and in 2006, she followed up with another book, “Shock: The Healing Power of Electroconvulsive Therapy.” In this work, she shared how electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) had dramatically impacted her mental health, serving as a beacon of hope for those battling depression.

Champion for Human Rights

Kitty’s advocacy didn’t stop at mental health; she was a fervent supporter of human rights issues worldwide. She actively participated in humanitarian efforts, including resettlement programs for Vietnamese, Laotian, and Afghan refugees. Her commitment to social justice extended to the President’s Commission on the Holocaust, which she was appointed to by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, and later as a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council by President George H.W. Bush in 1989.

Among her many contributions, Kitty’s role as the first practicing Jew on a major party presidential ticket provided her with a platform to educate others about the Holocaust, genocide, and issues surrounding homelessness and political refugees. She used her voice to raise awareness about the stigmas associated with mental health and substance abuse, paving the way for greater understanding and compassion in these areas.

A Lasting Legacy

The impact of Kitty Dukakis’s work has not gone unnoticed. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Attorney General Andrea Campbell, among many others, have praised her significant contributions to various social issues, especially in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting substance abuse awareness. Kitty’s story serves as a reminder that even in the most challenging times, hope, change, and the power of advocacy can lead to a brighter future.

As we remember Kitty Dukakis, we celebrate a life dedicated to service, resilience, and unwavering compassion. Her legacy will surely continue to inspire countless individuals on their journeys toward hope and healing.
