Remembering Billy Strayhorn, the Jazz Icon

Billy Strayhorn, one of the 20th Century’s most remarkable talents, is generally touted for his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. His lasting monument, however, is a devastatingly beautiful songbook that transcends category and redefines the American Songbook. Strayhorn wrote some of the most enduring standards in the history of both jazz and popular music, including “Take the A Train,” “Lush Life,” and “Chelsea Bridge.”

Founded in 2015 by Justin Varnes, the Jazz Legacy Project is an innovative platform dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music. The project established a unique approach to Jazz History education at Georgia State University and carved out an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note jazz club in Atlanta. With their creative blend of educational storytelling and sublime performances, they’ve repeatedly sold out their shows for the past six years.
