Atlanta — A recent incident on Interstate 285 has brought to light significant safety concerns for drivers in the metro Atlanta area. A local driver, Brian Briggs, found himself facing over $2,000 in damages after an encounter with hazardous objects on the highway.
Briggs described the alarming moment when he couldn’t avoid hitting two cemented prongs while attempting to pull onto the shoulder of I-285 westbound at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. “It was like immediate, pop pop. I heard and felt it,” Briggs recounted. The impact severely damaged both the front and rear tires on the driver-side of his vehicle.
Feeling devastated, he examined the scene and found the metal prongs sticking out of the highway which he believed were responsible for the damage. “I’m disgusted at why they would leave something like this in the roadway,” Briggs expressed. His frustration stemmed from what he perceived as negligence in maintaining safe road conditions.
After assessing the over $2,000 in damages caused by the prongs, Briggs sought reimbursement from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). However, he was met with a surprising response. A GDOT representative informed him that they wouldn’t be held responsible since the damage occurred outside the lane of travel. This response left Briggs feeling unsupported in his quest for justice and accountability.
Briggs is convinced that the prongs were left behind from a construction sign that was used during recent road improvements at the I-285/Peachtree Boulevard interchange, completed in 2023. While a Google image from January showed no visible prongs, construction cones were indeed present at that location.
“I don’t want it to be a tragedy,” Briggs emphasized, underscoring his concerns for the safety of other drivers who might unexpectedly encounter similar hazards.
Briggs’ story has already sparked conversations among local drivers and community members about the importance of vigilant road maintenance and clear communication from transportation authorities. There is a shared hope that incidents like this can be prevented in the future through better oversight and swift corrective actions to remove potential hazards.
As metro Atlanta drivers continue to navigate bustling highways and ongoing construction projects, the incident with Brian Briggs stands as a reminder of the ever-present needs for improved roadway safety measures. Residents and drivers are encouraged to stay informed and report any roadside hazards they encounter to the appropriate authorities promptly.
The call for better road maintenance not only addresses immediate problems but also fosters a proactive approach to ensuring the well-being of everyone who travels these thoroughfares.
In a heartwarming moment of recognition, two Apalachee football players were honored as co-captains during a recent game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Kansas City Chiefs. This gesture celebrated their athletic excellence and inspired many young athletes across the region.
As we look to the future, let us hope for safer roads and continued community spirit in recognizing and supporting local talents.
