Atlanta Braces for Hurricane Helene: School Closures and Activity Cancellations

ATLANTA — With the looming threat of significant flooding due to Hurricane Helene, many school districts across Georgia are making important changes to their schedules. Helene, having intensified into a Category 2 storm with winds clocking at 90 miles per hour, is expected to hit Georgia late Thursday night, reaching the metro Atlanta area by Friday morning.

Here are the districts that have announced changes for Friday:

Atlanta Public Schools (APS): All APS schools will be closed on Friday. District office employees will work remotely. Expect an update on Friday afternoon regarding activities currently planned for Saturday.

Atlanta Technical College: The campuses will be operating virtually on Friday.

Banks County Schools: Schools will be closed for both students and staff on Friday, with all sports and extracurricular activities canceled.

Barrow County Schools: All schools will be closed, and after-school activities have been canceled.

Bartow County Schools: Schools will be closed on Friday to all students and staff.

Butts County Schools: Schools will be closed on Friday.

Calhoun City Schools: All schools will be closed for students and staff on Friday.

Carroll County Schools: It will be a Distance Learning Day for all students, with employees working remotely to support learning and other requirements. The decision regarding Friday night football games will be made later.

Chattooga County Schools: Schools will be closed on Friday.

Cherokee County Schools: Schools will be closed on Friday.

Clark Atlanta University: The campus will be closed on Friday.

Clarke County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday.

Clayton County Schools: Schools and district offices will be closed on Friday. All athletic events and extracurricular activities for Friday and Saturday are canceled.

Clayton State University: Will be closed all day on Friday.

Clay County, NC Schools: Virtual learning will proceed as scheduled on Friday.

Coweta County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday, and after-school activities have been canceled.

Dawson County Schools: All schools will be closed to students and staff on Friday, with all extracurricular activities canceled.

City of Decatur Schools: All facilities will be closed on Friday, including College Heights ECLC. All extracurricular activities are canceled.

DeKalb County Schools: All schools and activities will be closed on Friday.

Douglas County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday, and after-school activities are canceled.

Emory University: Transition to remote work and virtual learning on Friday.

Fannin County Schools: A virtual learning day on Friday with extracurricular activities canceled.

Fayette County Schools: Schools will be closed on Friday.

Floyd County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday, with extracurricular activities for Friday and Saturday to be decided later.

Fulton County Schools: All schools and central offices will be closed on Friday.

Georgia College & State University: Classes and programming activities will be suspended on Friday.

Georgia Gwinnett College: The college will be closed on Friday.

Georgia Tech: Transition to Modified Operations and a Digital Learning Day on Friday.

Gordon County Schools: All schools will be closed for students and staff on Friday.

Greene County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday.

Griffin-Spalding County Schools: District operations will be canceled on Friday.

Gwinnett County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday, and all after-school activities are canceled. All activities and events on Saturday are canceled.

Habersham County Schools: All schools will be closed for students and staff on Friday.

Hall County Schools: The Hall County School District will close schools on Friday, and all extracurricular events are canceled or postponed.

Haralson County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday.

Heard County Schools: All schools will be closed on Friday.

Henry County Schools: Schools will be closed on Friday, with all school-related activities canceled.

Jackson County Schools: Schools and offices will be closed on Friday.

Jasper County Schools: A virtual learning day on Friday.

Kennesaw State University: The university will be closed on Friday.
