With the spirit of exploration and a thirst for knowledge, homeschoolers of all ages participated in the exciting event of Homeschool Day, where they performed a themed “March” through various Atlanta neighborhoods on Thursday, March 21, 2024. The event, starting at 10:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time, was all about promoting educational opportunities outside of a traditional school environment.
Considering the hefty fees of regular schoolings for both kids and adults, the Homeschool Day brings about a cost-effective offering. Non-member Kids were welcomed for a nominal fee of $9, and the same applied to Members’ Kids. Children under the age 3 were invited for free. The cost for non-yet-member Adults was set at $15, while Member Adults could participate free of charge.
The march traced its roots at the Atlanta History Center, which is located at 130 West Paces Ferry Road N.W. in Atlanta, Georgia. Known for its extensive collections and exhibits that showcase the story of Atlanta, the Atlanta History Center served as a suitable starting point for this educational journey.
Contrary to what one might initially think, this “March” through Atlanta neighborhoods wasn’t just a physical journey—it was a chance for these homeschool learners to engage in active learning, exploring different geographical, historical, and cultural aspects of Atlanta’s neighborhoods. Although detailed description of the route and activities weren’t provided from the venue, the essence of this event was to broaden their horizons and view their city from a new perspective.
Inspired by the success and reception of the Homeschool Day March, more such opportunities are expected to be rolled out for homeschoolers. Focused on encouraging learning in an unenclosed, real-world environment, these events are anticipated to include a varying mix of theme-based marches, educative rendezvous’ at various Atlanta locales, and a blend of intellectually stimulating activities.
At its core, Homeschool Day also served as a platform to build and fortify community relationships. For many homeschooling families, opportunities to engage in group activities within a socially inclusive environment can be few. Therefore, sharing such collective experiences helps create stronger bonds among participants and the wider community, supporting an enriching and collaborative homeschooling experience.
In conclusion, the “March” had a welcome reception from both those who attended the event and the citizens of Atlanta’s neighborhoods. The hope for future Homeschool Day events is to continue this tech-free, outdoor experience that allows learners to explore their surroundings, engage with their community, and broaden their learning experience outside the four walls of their home.
