Key allocations focus on road resurfacing and other safety improvements, particularly benefitting the roadways in southwest Georgia. ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is set to dramatically enhance the state’s infrastructure with the award of 54 construction contracts for various transportation projects totaling $173.9 million. This initiative, announced in a recent press release, promises numerous improvements particularly benefitting the roadways in southwest Georgia.
A significant portion of the budget has been earmarked for a series of resurfacing contracts, which represent a whopping 54 percent or $93.5 million of the awarded funds. Among these projects is a crucial maintenance contract on State Road 112, which encompasses 16.49 miles of milling, plant mix resurfacing, and shoulder rehabilitation. This stretch of road, beginning at the Worth County line and extending eastward past Baker Place, carries an estimated completion date of December 15, 2020. The contract was awarded to The Scruggs Company based in Hahira, who bid $3.6 million.
The largest investment from this recent award cycle is a $19.5 million contract given to E.R. Snell Contractor Inc. This contract includes resurfacing 3.56 miles of concrete along the vital I-285/State Route 407 corridor in Clayton and Fulton counties, specifically from the west end of the airport tunnel to U.S. 29/State Route 14. Also noteworthy is a $19.5 million bridge construction contract granted to Brasfield & Gorrie LLC. This project will cover a mile of bridge work over multiple water bodies in Bibb County.
In addition to the significant resurfacing contracts, this award also consists of funds allocated for bridge rehabilitation, safety improvements, and additional road construction projects statewide. The awards include over $60 million allocated for safety improvements and various construction projects scattered across different counties.
The contracts announced in June mark a critical milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance Georgia’s transportation system, bringing the total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2024 to an impressive $843 million, marking substantial investment in the state’s infrastructure. The fiscal year began on July 1, 2024, highlighting the proactive approach taken by GDOT to ensure safer and more efficient travel.
As projects commence, GDOT has promised to provide timely updates on construction schedules, lane closures, and detours to minimize disruptions. Detailed project schedules will be published on their website, allowing the public to stay informed about developments affecting their communities.
The announcement of these contracts is not merely about paving new roads; it symbolizes a broader commitment by the GDOT to prioritize safety, mobility, and sustainability. As the state continues to grow, these enhancements are essential for meeting the population’s needs and ensuring the resilience of Georgia’s transportation system.
In conclusion, the awarded contracts represent a strategic investment that aligns with GDOT’s vision of lifting Georgia’s competitive edge through robust transportation infrastructure. With these improvements on the horizon, residents of southwest Georgia and beyond can look forward to safer, more reliable travel in the years to come.
