The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced a significant $36.5 million investment in infrastructure, including multiple construction and safety projects. Key highlights include a $4.2 million roundabout in Monroe County and various intersection improvements aimed at enhancing road safety and traffic flow across Georgia. This initiative not only addresses current infrastructure needs but aims to cultivate opportunities for local businesses and engage contractors in critical projects for the state’s transportation future.
In a significant move aimed at enhancing road safety and infrastructure, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded a total of $18.6 million in construction and safety projects this January. The announcement comes as the state embarks on a series of improvements designed to bolster transportation safety while catering to the growing needs of Georgia’s infrastructure.
The highlight of the awards is the largest single construction investment, amounting to approximately $4.2 million, designated for a new roundabout at the intersection of State Route (SR) 74 and SR 42 in Monroe County. This project is not just about aesthetics; it is aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow at a critical juncture.
Following closely is another roundabout project in Jackson County valued at around $3.7 million. Located at the intersection of SR 124, SR 60, and Sam Freeman Road (CR 17), this initiative also includes the installation of a sophisticated video detection system (VDS). Such systems are crucial for monitoring traffic conditions and enhancing safety through quicker response times.
Evidence of GDOT’s commitment to safe travel is also reflected in a $3.9 million safety project. This investment focuses on intersection improvements at SR 53 and Brownlee Mountain Road/Plainville Road in Gordon County. It aims to implement a Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) intersection design, a modern solution that reduces the potential for collisions by limiting turning conflicts. This project is particularly remarkable as it represents 18% of the total funds allocated in January.
Interestingly, among the awarded projects was one that had been previously deferred. This project symbolizes a significant $36.5 million investment intended for widening and reconstructing nearly 2.4 miles of lanes on Bell Ferry Road in Cherokee County. Starting just north of Victory Drive and extending south of Port Victoria Way, this project underscores the GDOT’s dedication to improving essential thoroughfares that connect communities.
The January awards contributed to an impressive total of $1.27 billion in construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2025, which began on July 1, 2024. This encompasses a range of projects, including those categorized under Transportation Investment Act (TIA), Design-Bid-Build, and locally administered initiatives.
Bids for the Design-Bid-Build projects were received on January 17, culminating in contract awards on January 31 to the lowest qualified bidders. This process highlights the GDOT’s systematic approach to ensuring efficient use of public funds and promoting competition among contractors.
To foster inclusivity and maximize efficiency, the GDOT encourages all contractors and consultants interested in participating in these projects to prequalify with the department. This includes opportunities for Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs), registered small businesses, and veteran-owned small businesses. Such initiatives are part of GDOT’s broader strategy to cultivate a diverse and robust network of service providers for its infrastructure projects.
As Georgia’s leading transportation authority, the GDOT plays a critical role in the planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways, bridges, waterways, public transit systems, rail, general aviation, as well as bike and pedestrian programs. The department employs nearly 4,000 individuals and remains committed to delivering a transportation system that emphasizes innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility.
With the latest project awards, Georgia DOT’s vision continues to pave the path toward enhancing Georgia’s overall competitiveness through proactive leadership in the transportation sector. The coming months will surely reveal the tangible benefits of these vital infrastructural investments.
