Georgia State Women’s Basketball Suffers Heavy Defeat to Alabama, 98-49

Tuscaloosa, AL – Georgia State Women’s Basketball Faces Tough Loss Against Alabama

On a challenging afternoon in Tuscaloosa, the Georgia State women’s basketball team found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard, falling to the Alabama Crimson Tide with a final score of 98-49. Despite showing glimpses of potential, the Panthers were unable to keep pace with their formidable opponents.

A Rocky Start and a Brief Lead

The game began with a bit of promise for Georgia State as they managed to snag an early 5-4 lead. The Panthers quickly built on that lead with a strong effort, going on a 6-0 run highlighted by a three-pointer from Mahogany Matthews. This surge seemed to electrify the Georgia State bench, pushing their advantage to 11-4 around the halfway mark of the first quarter.

However, things took a turn for the worse as the Crimson Tide ramped up their defensive intensity. Georgia State struggled to maintain their momentum, and by the end of the first quarter, they found themselves trailing 19-15.

Second Quarter Struggles

The second quarter proved to be particularly tough for the Panthers. Alabama asserted their dominance on both sides of the court, taking a firm grip on the game and racing out to a significant 50-27 lead by halftime. Georgia State exhibited some resilience, but it was clear that Alabama was in charge.

Finding a Rhythm

After the halftime break, the Panthers came out with a bit more energy, hoping to spark a comeback. They managed to string together a 7-0 run late in the third quarter, with Kaleigh Addie contributing a crucial basket to cut the deficit to 68-36. Still, Alabama responded forcefully, regaining their foothold and pushing the score to 77-37 heading into the final frame.

Fourth Quarter Highlights

The fourth quarter saw Georgia State trying hard to compete, especially near the basket. They scored six of their ten fourth-quarter points in the paint, showcasing some offensive skills. The Panthers even went on a 5-0 run at one point, featuring a nice jumper from Cheyenne Holloman, bringing the score to 91-46.

Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, as Alabama continued to dominate the pace of the game. They ultimately closed the contest strong, finishing with a commanding score of 98-49, teaching the Panthers a tough lesson in resilience and competition.

Standout Performers

In a game filled with learning opportunities, some players managed to stand out. Mikyla Tolivert led the Panthers with 10 points, proving to be a reliable offensive option. Matthews, while contributing a modest score of five points, also showcased her defensive prowess with four steals. Moreover, Georgia State’s bench made a noticeable impact by contributing 25 points to the game.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, Georgia State will be back in action this Sunday, December 8, as they face off against Sewanee at the GSU Convocation Center. With valuable lessons learned from this tough game in Alabama, the Panthers are eager to regroup and come back even stronger.

Fans will be looking forward to seeing how this young team can build on their experiences and continue to grow throughout the season.
