In a heartwarming announcement from Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Education has proudly recognized a total of 624 schools as official Math Leaders for extraordinary achievements in mathematics. This initiative highlights the significant role that strong math skills play, not only in students’ education but also in their futures.
Schools earned the title of Math Leaders based on their impressive performance or notable growth in the proportion of students scoring at the Proficient Learner level or higher in mathematics. To boost the focus on numeracy, the recognition evaluated performance specifically in fifth and eighth grades, as well as high school mathematics through the Algebra: Concepts and Connections End-of-Course Assessment (EOC).
In his celebratory message, State School Superintendent Richard Woods expressed his heartfelt congratulations, stating, “Congratulations to our first-ever Math Leader schools!” He emphasized the importance of numeracy skills, saying, “These schools and their educators, students, families, and communities have worked hard to implement the new K-12 Mathematics Standards and prepare all students for life.” It’s clear that the passion for math in these schools reflects a strong commitment to student success!
Throughout the fall season, Superintendent Woods is set to visit many of these Math Leader schools personally, to spread joy and recognition for their remarkable accomplishments. Dr. April Aldridge, Deputy Superintendent of Teaching & Learning, also chimed in, calling it a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the hard work of both students and educators. She noted that Georgia’s new K-12 Mathematics Standards have been rolled out with a focused intention to expand opportunities for students.
The qualifications to be acknowledged as a Math Leader primarily hinge on students reaching the Proficient Learner level or higher on the Georgia Milestones mathematics assessments. This ensures that the program is truly focused on tangible results in student performance — a priority that resonates throughout the educational community in Georgia.
Significantly, Georgia implemented new K-12 Mathematics Standards during the 2023-2024 school year, after being adopted in 2021. These standards were crafted with input from local math teachers, educational leaders, parents, students, and even business representatives. The clear aim was to make the standards understandable, age-appropriate, and manageable for students, allowing them to master concepts rather than merely getting a quick overview.
The early results from the 2023-24 Georgia Milestones assessments indicate that these new standards are making a difference. Students have shown wonderful improvement in their mathematics skills, with scores rising on six out of seven tests. Noteworthy growth areas include an impressive eight-point increase in eighth-grade math scores and strong performance in high school Algebra assessments.
These promising results already highlight the significant positive trajectory of Georgia’s educational landscape. With a total of 624 schools now being recognized as Math Leaders, it’s clear that many dedicated educators and students are working incredibly hard. As more schools apply these newly adopted standards, the hope is that even more students will experience the joy and benefits of mastering mathematics.
This recognition not only showcases the current success in math education within Georgia but also paints an optimistic picture for the future of students across the state. Here’s to the Math Leaders, their communities, and all the progress that lies ahead!
