The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has awarded $36 million for 21 construction projects aimed at improving roadway safety and infrastructure. Major investments include nearly $8 million for bridge construction over the Westside Beltline Trail and significant funding for 12 resurfacing projects. With an overall budget of $1 billion for Fiscal Year 2025, these initiatives showcase the DOT’s commitment to enhancing the state’s transportation systems and ensuring safer travel for residents and visitors.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has recently awarded contracts for a significant array of projects designed to enhance the state’s infrastructure. In a move that will impact road safety, construction, rehabilitation, and resurfacing, a total of **21 Design-Bid-Build projects** were greenlit in November 2024.
Among the various projects, the largest commitment of nearly $8 million focuses on **bridge construction** on US 29/SR 14, specifically over the **Westside Beltline Trail** in Fulton County. Surprisingly, this project alone, paired with one additional construction initiative, accounts for a whopping **23%** of the total funds awarded. This underscores the state’s commitment to improving critical structures that facilitate smooth transportation.
A staggering **$36 million** of the total funds has been earmarked for **12 resurfacing projects**, which highlight Georgia’s ongoing commitment to maintaining quality road surfaces. The largest of these resurfacing efforts spans **4.129 miles** of **milling and plant mix resurfacing** on I-24/SR 409 in Dade County, extending from the Tennessee state line. Following closely is a **$5.5 million** resurfacing project covering **7.130 miles** on SR 10, occurring across Clarke and Oconee counties. These resurfacing projects, combined with ten others, cumulatively represent **66%** of the total funding dispensed this round, indicating a strong focus on renewing worn-out road surfaces.
The safety of Georgia’s drivers remains a top priority, with five safety projects receiving an allocation of **$1.4 million**. One notable project includes improvement at the intersection of Ashford-Dunwoody Road with an additional eastbound on-ramp lane at I-285/SR 407 in DeKalb County. All safety projects together constitute about **5%** of the overall funds, reflecting the DOT’s intent to bolster road safety across its jurisdiction.
Furthermore, a **rehabilitation project** involving **8.680 miles** of milling and shoulder rehabilitation on SR 182 is set to receive around **$2 million**, making up close to **4%** of the total awarded funds. There’s also a pivotal contract valued at **$2.2 million** aimed at executing repairs for various bridges across Fulton County, emphasizing a broad approach to infrastructure resilience.
With these latest awards, the total construction contracts for **Fiscal Year 2025** have now soared to **$1 billion**, marking a substantial investment in the state’s infrastructure. The current fiscal year commenced on **July 1, 2024**, indicating a robust schedule ahead in revitalizing Georgia’s roadways and transportation systems.
In anticipation of travel spikes, particularly during the Labor Day weekend, the Georgia DOT has announced a suspension of lane closures on interstates and state routes from **August 30** to **September 3**. Although construction-related lane closures will pause, the DOT advises motorists to remain cautious, as work teams may still be present near highways. Notably, historical traffic trends for the holiday weekend will fuel forecasts on travel impacts and demand.
The DOT’s ongoing commitment to statewide development is evidenced not only in November’s endeavors but also in earlier awards throughout the fiscal year. In **September 2024**, for example, the DOT allocated a significant **$76.9 million** to several resurfacing projects, establishing a clear trend in prioritizing transportation infrastructure.
As Georgia moves forward with multiple projects underpinned by these substantial investments, the state’s residents and travelers alike can anticipate safer, smoother travel across its extensive highway network.
