Gwinnett County, Ga. – A community is in mourning following a tragic incident at a gas station on the bustling Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Early morning last Friday, a routine stop at the gas station turned into a scene of horror and sadness when Anthony Bernard Miles, 41, was shot and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The unfortunate event unfolded around 7:45 a.m. at an Amoco gas station located within the 4100 block of Jimmy Carter Boulevard, an area typically busy with patrons and residents starting their day. Witnesses state that Miles was standing outside the gas station when he was approached by an individual carrying a gun.
Investigators swiftly identified this encounter as a random attack. The officer leading the investigation noted, “There doesn’t appear to be any pre-existing motive, and the victim’s family has no knowledge of any connection to the suspect.” This has left the community trying to comprehend the untimely death of someone so respected and liked. A nearby business owner, choosing to remain anonymous due to the distress caused by the event, described Miles as “a great guy,” and shared how he was known to bring positivity and respect wherever he went.
Just days after the incident, Gwinnett County police announced the arrest of 31-year-old Donte Dieal Newcomb-Donnelly, who was taken into custody without any resistance. “He was apprehended without any incident,” stated Cpl. Juan Madiedo from the county police department. Newcomb-Donnelly faces several serious charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes.
While the arrest has brought some solace to those impacted, it has also raised numerous questions about the motive behind the shooting, especially since the suspect is reported as being uncooperative with investigators thus far. Cpl. Madiedo emphasized, “If there was some type of motive, we hope to get more information here.”
For those close to Miles, his passing has struck a deep chord. He was a known member of a local supporters’ club, reinforcing the sense of loss felt not only by his family but by the wider community. A viewing in Savannah is set for Friday, followed by a service in Decatur the following Thursday, allowing friends, family, and community members to pay their respects and honor his memory.
The business owner nearby expressed relief over the swiftly made arrest but underscored the lingering need for justice. “I’m very happy police made an arrest. Justice should be served,” he reflected, capturing the broader sentiment of a community wanting closure but ever aware of the void left in their lives by such a senseless act.
As Donte Dieal Newcomb-Donnelly remains in the county jail without bond, the Gwinnett County police continue their diligent investigation, aiming to shed light on this bewildering case and provide closure to a devastated community.
