Exciting Skies Await at the Atlanta Air Show!

Hey, Atlanta! Who’s ready for some high-flying action? The skies above Metro Atlanta are set to become a canvas of thrilling aerodynamics with the upcoming Air Show that’s happening on October 26 and 27, right here at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

Why October?

October is known as one of the driest months in our area, which means clear skies are more than likely. That’s perfect for an air show, wouldn’t you agree?

What to Expect

The show kicks off around 11:30 in the morning, but the real stars of the event, the Thunderbirds, will take to the sky as the grand finale. Chris Dirato, an official from the Air Show, promises an experience filled with excitement. “I highly recommend bringing earplugs,” he advises, especially for the kiddos, as it will be incredibly loud during the military acts. However, the noise is part of the thrill, offering “definitely goosebump moments.”

More Than Just Fun

This isn’t just a show for daredevil enthusiasts; it’s a family-friendly, patriotic event. So go ahead and wave those red, white, and blue flags high! The show is expected to last around 2.5 hours, and regardless of whether you’re a big aviation fan or just out for family fun, you’ll be moved by the spectacle and spirit of the event.

Weather Woes?

Even though the air show is a rain or shine event, the cloud ceiling can affect the type of show that will occur. There’s a sunny day show, a middle-cloud deck show, and a low or “flat” show. Keep tabs on real-time weather updates via the event’s online platforms.

In Conversation with Major Bryce Turner

We caught up with Major Bryce Turner from the US Air Force Thunderbirds to learn what it’s like to pilot these fantastic machines. Curious about how one becomes a fighter pilot? Major Turner was more than happy to share his journey. After attending the University of Virginia and taking part in ROTC, he was selected for pilot training. What followed was almost a year and a half learning the ropes at Air Force bases in Oklahoma and Texas, before finally flying the F-16s in Arizona.

The Famed F-16

Speaking of F-16s, the plane is truly a marvel. “We have a single engine, single tail, it’s a multi-role fighter,” Major Turner explains, showcasing its versatility. This particular model has had slight modifications, swapping its machine gun for a smoke system to create stunning visual displays in the sky.

The Challenges and Rewards

Being a fighter pilot is no walk in the park. It’s grueling both mentally and physically. Turns out, they operate under up to 9Gs of gravity force! “If you’re 200 pounds, you’re going to feel like 1800 pounds,” Major Turner noted. And there’s the family impact too. But he remains positive about the sacrifices, noting how rewarding it is to support ground troops so they can return to their families.

Making an Impact

Beyond showing off some jaw-dropping aerobatics, the Thunderbirds have a mission to inspire. Major Turner emphasizes, “We really like to focus on that inspirational piece.” The goal? To inspire people to pursue their passions, whatever they may be, with dedication and persistence.

So, folks, mark your calendars and get ready to be awed. Whether you’re a plane aficionado or just up for some patriotic fun, the Atlanta Air Show promises to be an unforgettable event!
