Atlanta, Ga. — Hold on to your hats, folks! This election season has kicked off with a bang here in Atlanta, where a whopping four million people have already cast their votes early, smashing previous records! Isn’t that something to celebrate? The good news is that the lines are moving along quite swiftly, with the Secretary of State announcing that the average wait time is just about two minutes. How’s that for speedy service?
As the excitement builds, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has reminded everyone that polls will close at 7 p.m. tonight. But here’s a comforting note: if you are already standing in line when the clock strikes 7, you can still cast your ballot. Isn’t that a relief? Raffensperger also mentioned that we can expect the results to start rolling in by 10 p.m. tonight. Mark your calendars!
Despite the hustle and bustle, it hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. Officials are taking any threat to the election process very seriously. There was a fake video circulating, allegedly from Russian sources, claiming that Haitian immigrants were voting illegally in Georgia. The Secretary of State dismissed this as disinformation—definitely not the kind of thing we want to see around here!
In fact, two polling locations had to be evacuated for about 30 minutes earlier today due to what were reported as “bomb threats.” But, thankfully, these turned out to be not credible. Secretary of State Raffensperger also mentioned that several non-U.S. citizens have been removed from voter rolls after admitting they weren’t citizens during jury duty selection. This is a proactive measure to ensure that only eligible voters will be casting their ballots.
Officials are aiming for a fast turnaround when it comes to reporting results. According to Blake Evans, the State Elections Director, all advanced voting results and absentee ballots received by the day before Election Day must be reported by 8 p.m.. This gives voters a little hope that we won’t be left hanging too long, right?
If you’re planning to drop off an absentee ballot, remember that it needs to be submitted by 7 p.m. tonight. Don’t forget your photo ID—the state requires it to vote in Georgia. And if you happen to forget it? Fear not! Between 5 and 7 p.m., you’ll be able to vote at any precinct in your county. However, if you don’t have your ID on hand, you can vote provisionally. Just make sure you fix that by Friday for your vote to be counted!
And as we gear up for a big election night, there’s even more to look forward to. Just around the corner, it will soon be time for the holidays, which means we’ll be sipping on our favorite festive drinks. Have you heard? Starbucks is rolling out its annual holiday menu on Nov. 7! Now that’s a sweet way to cap off a busy voting season!
So, Atlanta, get out there and make your voice heard! Every vote matters, and tonight you can feel the buzz of democracy in the air. Let’s make this Election Day one to remember!
