Welcome to Smyrna, Georgia! If you’re looking for a peaceful place to reflect on history or perhaps just enjoy a beautiful view, then Riverview Memorial Park is the destination for you. It’s not just any park; it’s a place brimming with stories, remarkable residents, and, of course, stunning vistas. Let’s take a stroll through this serene spot together!
Just over five years ago, we first penned an article about this lovely cemetery, now promising to give it a fresh look as our readership has blossomed from just 10,000 to between 150,000 and 200,000 monthly! While the park is also known as Riverview Memorial Garden in some records, one consistent feature is its remarkable inhabitants. Back in the day, we highlighted two notable figures laid to rest here: the exceptionally talented Wendy Bagwell, a gospel singer and comedian, and William Grady “Roosterman” Bagby, a notorious bank robber from the Depression era.
Interestingly, these two are buried not far from one another, linking their legacies in a rather amusing twist of fate. To add to the fun, Bagwell owned a furniture store on South Cobb Drive, which experienced a string of burglaries. Rumor has it that Bagby and his brother were implicated in those crimes, making the proximity of their final resting places even more intriguing!
When you step into Riverview, you’ll find that its hilly terrain offers breathtaking views. If photography is your jam, don’t miss your chance to capture the stunning South Cobb Drive bridge over the Chattahoochee River. The park’s hills provide a phenomenal backdrop that’s sure to make your snapshots glow with charm.
If you and your family enjoy scavenger hunts, spend some time identifying the family names on gravestones that also grace the local roads. It’s a delightful way to connect the past with the present and gives a personal touch to the names we see every day.
Along with Bagwell and Bagby, Riverview is home to an extensive number of residents whose legacies still resonate today. If you’re looking to dive deeper, you can check out Find-a-Grave, which boasts a list of those interred here and provides photographs for around 75% of the markers!
For those of you on a quest to locate a specific grave, such as Bessie Johnson, remember that this cemetery is still a work in progress with active perpetual care. Don’t hesitate to contact the Sexton’s office at (404) 794-5317 for assistance. The office is situated at 5411 S Cobb Dr. SE, Smyrna, GA 30080.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting Riverview, we want to hear from you! Your thoughts and experiences can help future visitors appreciate everything this beautiful park has to offer. Whether you want to share a story, relay a ghost story, or recount a special moment, your words can inspire others to explore Riverview Memorial Park.
Riverview Memorial Park isn’t just a resting place for the departed; it’s a treasure trove of history waiting to be explored unlike any other. The combinations of stories, scenic views, and the ever-present connection to our roots make it a must-visit for anyone in or around Smyrna.
