Hey there, DeKalb County! Big news is bubbling up from Savanna’s very own U.S. Senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. Just this week, they announced some incredible news: millions of dollars are on the way to help improve our water infrastructure—not just for DeKalb but for the entire city of Atlanta!
Water is crucial. It’s the lifeblood of our homes and businesses. But let’s face it; we’ve been experiencing some pretty challenging times with our water systems lately. DeKalb County has had its fair share of water main breaks this year, though thankfully we haven’t seen outages as severe as the one that hit Atlanta back in May, which took days to resolve. Even so, many residents across our county have felt the pinch from multiple breaks affecting thousands at various times.
As the departing CEO of DeKalb County, Michael Thurmond, puts it, without a whopping $4.5 billion investment in improvements, our water infrastructure might be at risk of a catastrophic failure. Yikes! That’s a bit scary, right?
In a wonderful turn of events, Senator Warnock has successfully secured $40 million dedicated to water and wastewater projects right here in our beloved DeKalb County. This funding is part of a bipartisan bill called the Water Resources Development Act of 2024, which was passed with an overwhelming vote of 97 to 1. Talk about teamwork!
Warnock highlighted the situation perfectly in a press release, saying, “Georgians across the state rely on safe, clean, and reliable water for drinking, maintaining homes and businesses, and more. This type of work often goes unnoticed until disaster strikes, which is why it’s vital to secure investments today to protect Georgia’s water infrastructure tomorrow.”
This crucial funding will allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide much-needed planning, design, and construction support for our county’s water projects. And that’s not all! The same bill also lifts the funding cap for Atlanta’s environmental infrastructure authority from $75 million to $100 million. How awesome is that?
Senator Ossoff chimed in too, stating, “Clean, safe, healthy drinking water is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. For families, for seniors, and for businesses in the community, any interruption of safe drinking water is an emergency. That’s why we pushed for this legislation to help upgrade our water infrastructure.”
As we look ahead, we should all be keeping an eye on the county commission, which is currently weighing the possibility of increasing water rates as a way to fund these much-needed improvements. It’s a tough balance to strike: ensuring that we have a reliable system while also being cautious about costs to residents.
In summary, DeKalb County and Atlanta are on a positive trajectory toward enhancing our water systems, thanks to this significant investment from our senators. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that these upgrades come through smoothly so we can all enjoy the clean, safe water we deserve!
