DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A tight-knit community in DeKalb County is struggling to come to terms with a shocking tragedy that has left five lives lost, including that of two young children. The heartbreaking incident unfolded on a seemingly ordinary Saturday night at The Vineyards at Flat Shoals apartment complex, where police say a murder-suicide took place, forever changing the lives of many.
The identified gunman, 32-year-old Jonathan Darden, reportedly took the lives of his girlfriend, her daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren before turning the gun on himself. The victims, who were discovered during a welfare check by DeKalb County Police, include: 43-year-old Mollian Johnson, 25-year-old Kaylyn Samuel, and her two children, five-year-old Jedorah Powell and one-year-old Jontavious Powell.
Just days after the tragedy, Chanel Carter, Johnson’s middle daughter, spoke to reporters, revealing the gut-wrenching details of her family’s loss. She hadn’t heard from her mother or sister-in-law since that fateful Monday. The nightmare began as she waited outside her home for hours, only to receive the devastating news that her entire family had been murdered.
“Immediately, I saw a body on the couch, and it terrified me,” Carter recalled, still reeling from the disbelief. “I had to wait outside for hours until police confirmed my whole family had been murdered.” In an emotional recounting, she shared that her mother had been trying to escape an abusive relationship with Darden, the alleged killer. “He went and told the neighbor. He said he planned to wait for Christmas dinner when all my mom’s kids were here to do it to everyone,” Carter disclosed, expressing her fear that things escalated sooner than expected.
As the community gathers to mourn, Chanel Carter described her family’s warmth and joy, painting a picture of a life filled with love. “My mom was the best mom ever. She made our lives so easy,” she said, reminiscing about her beloved mother. In an emotional tribute to her sister-in-law Kaylyn, Carter added, “She was so young and one of the funniest people to ever be around. She loved being a mother and she loved her kids.”
Chanel also shared precious memories of her niece Jedorah, who had autism. “She was five years old, but you couldn’t tell her anything. She was so bright and full of life,” Carter added dimension to the tragedy by highlighting the joyful spirit of young Jontavious. “He loved me so much,” she said with a bittersweet smile.
As the family grapples with this unimaginable loss, they face the daunting task of bringing their loved ones back home for burial. Fundraising efforts are underway to help cover the costs associated with transporting the victims’ bodies and the subsequent funerals. “I just want to get them home and put away properly so I can start grieving and remembering the good times instead of this tragic moment,” Carter said, demonstrating a profound desire to honor her family’s memory.
For those wishing to support, there are avenues available to assist the family during this painful time. The community has rallied together, showing a spirit of compassion and solidarity that is desperately needed in the aftermath of such a traumatic event.
In a world where violence often seems overwhelming, stories like this serve to remind us all of the fragility of life and the importance of reaching out and supporting one another. There are resources available for those feeling lost or in need of support, an essential reminder that no one should have to navigate grief alone.
