Decatur City Commission to Discuss School Zone Speed Cameras

Decatur, GA – If you’re in town on September 16, you might want to swing by the City Commission meeting. There’s a lot on the agenda, including an important discussion about speed enforcement cameras in school zones. The meeting kicks off at 5:30 p.m., with a closed-door executive session before the public gets a chance to weigh in on various topics.

Speed Cameras for Safety

The main focus of the evening is likely to be an amendment to city code that would allow for the installation of speed enforcement cameras around several school zones in Decatur. A prior meeting back in February saw the commission approve a deal with Blue Line Solutions to get this exciting initiative rolling. The proposal outlines zones around five schools designed to keep our kids safe, and we can all appreciate that!

Decatur Police Captain Billy Woodruff submitted a memo highlighting the specific locations where these cameras would be placed:

  • Scott Boulevard near Westchester Elementary School
  • West College Avenue for both Beacon Hill Middle School and Oakhurst Elementary School
  • Clairemont Avenue by Clairemont Elementary School
  • Church Street for Clairemont Elementary School
  • South Candler Street around Winnona Park Elementary School

These measures would allow automated enforcement of speed limits starting one hour before school and continuing one hour after school lets out. What a great way to promote safety in our neighborhoods!

Other Important Discussions

That’s not all that’s on the table during the meeting. The commission will also delve into updates on affordable housing projects, discuss the potential removal of certain tree ordinance requirements to help support a housing initiative at Legacy Park, and consider potential changes to employees’ retirement benefits. Specifically, they’re looking at increasing the benefit for surviving spouses from 50% to 75% of an employee’s calculated benefit—definitely a significant change that could ease the financial burden on families in our community.

The commission will also review plans for new equipment, including a 27-yard rear loader refuse truck, set to make refuse collection even more efficient. The truck will cost around $319,800 and payment will be staggered over five years.

New Paths and Improved Roads

In addition to the speed camera discussion, another exciting proposal is focused on the South Columbia Drive multi-use path. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity across the area and make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate safely. They are also considering a contract to refresh road markings along W. Ponce de Leon Avenue, ensuring our roads remain clear and safe for everyone.
