Decatur City Commission Set to Discuss $1.7 Million Multi-Use Path Construction and More on November 18

Exciting Developments Ahead for Decatur, GA!

Hey there, Decatur residents! This week, there’s some important news coming out of city hall that you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars for November 18 because the Decatur City Commission is set to make some big decisions that will enhance our beloved city.

Multi-Use Path Construction on the Agenda

One headline item on the agenda is a $1.7 million construction contract that could go to Sol Construction LLC for the third phase of the South Columbia Drive multi-use path. This is exciting because it means more safe walking and biking paths for all of us!

The commission will kick things off at 4:45 p.m. for a closed-door session where they’ll discuss legal and real estate matters. After that, a 5:30 p.m. work session will get everyone in the loop before the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. And don’t worry—these meetings are open to the public and held at city hall, located at 509 North McDonough Street. If you can’t make it in person, you can still participate virtually!

If you’re interested in tuning in from the comfort of your home, make sure to register in advance. All you need to do is click the registration link provided in the meeting details. Alternatively, you can join the meeting by phone! Simply call (929) 205-6099 and enter the meeting ID displayed in the registration confirmation. Plus, all meetings are live-streamed on the city’s website, so there’s really no excuse to miss out!

What’s So Great About the Multi-Use Path?

The new construction will create a safer path along South Columbia Drive that stretches across the entire length of Legacy Park from the north driveway down to Katie Kerr Drive. Not only will it offer a lovely space for walking or biking, but it will also connect our neighborhood with local schools like Winnona Park Elementary and Talley Street Upper Elementary. There will also be new crossings added at Inman Drive and Missionary Drive to ensure everyone can get to where they’re going safely!

The nice thing is that this project is being funded through the American Rescue Plan Act and Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. So, it’s essentially community money being put to great use for community benefits—what’s not to love?

Other Important Discussions on the Horizon

But wait, there’s more! In the same meeting, the city commission will also talk about a few other important topics. They’ll hear a proclamation regarding “Homelessness Awareness Month”, consider reaffirming the city’s ethics ordinance, adopt the amended Fiscal Year 2023-2024 budget, and approve an updated list of 2024 local street resurfacing projects. It’s a packed agenda for sure, and these discussions are just as vital for maintaining the quality of life we cherish here in Decatur!
