Community readers celebrating together

Welcome Back to the Vibrant World of the Decatur Book Festival!

Decatur, GA — Guess who’s back and better than ever? The Decatur Book Festival returned in full swing for 2024 after its little break in 2023, and it looks like everyone was beyond thrilled! The festival kicked off on October 4th with a wow-worthy keynote speech by the legendary Joyce Carol Oates. But the real magic unfolded on October 5th, where the streets of Decatur were alive with book lovers of all ages.

A Star-Studded Lineup and Activities Galore!

From author panels to live music, the festival had an impressive array of activities. People flocked over to get their favorite books signed and to catch glimpses of their beloved authors. Tanner Lynn was spotted creatively spinning signs to guide visitors to the Eagle Eye Book Shop tables, which makes browsing books an interactive adventure! Also, Samuel Ace shared a heartwarming moment reading with a little friend, highlighting the festival’s charming atmosphere.

The Little Ones Steal the Show

The Children’s Parade led by Jerry G. White was a joy to behold outside the First Baptist Church of Decatur. With colorful costumes and delightful dancing, this lovely tradition continues to capture hearts. Families turned out in full force, and dear Camila Crawford even celebrated her 5th birthday amidst the children’s activities. Judging by the smiles of tiny three-year-old Kinara Schaffner and trendy Niko Galatioto-Ruff with his shark sunglasses, it was a hit!

Dance, Music, and Fun

Siblings Rafael and Amina couldn’t resist dancing as Gabbie McGee and her band The 3 electrified the entertainment stage. Meanwhile, literature lovers enjoyed captivating reads; Stacey Abrams delighted audiences with a reading from her newest picture book, “Stacey Speaks Up.” Those eager for riveting tales found treasures like McCracken Poston Jr.’s true-crime story on the Decatur Square.

Community and Culture Together

Books weren’t the only thing to feast on — the Fisher family treated festival-goers to sweet and salty snacks for a cause. The festival was a beautiful celebration of creativity, with events highlighting local culture and each other’s stories. Young Leena Burton had fun drumming with Jerry G. White before the parade while visiting festival guests discovered old Decatur photos.

Support and Enjoyment Hand in Hand

Amidst all the exploring, festival-goers found time to relax at The Reading Room with savory pastries and refreshing drinks. Around the fest, the social connection was palpable as book lovers browsed an array of booksellers offering something for everyone. And who could forget the melodious tunes of the Agnes Scott College Collegiate Chorale that added a rich dose of harmony to the event?

As the sun set over downtown Decatur, the comfortable, laid-back charm of the Decatur Book Festival left a lingering sense of community spirit. There’s no denying its warmth embraced everyone, reminding us why this festival is such a beloved tradition. Cheers to stories, shared moments, and being part of something truly special!

See you next year, bookworms!
