Atlanta came alive on October 17 as the annual Crystal Peach Awards gala celebrated the remarkable achievements of individuals and companies that strengthen French-American ties. Hosted at the lovely Cherokee Town and Country Club, the event was a warm and joyous occasion, showcasing not just winners, but also the spirit of gratitude and service that defines the community.
Although guests were already aware of most award recipients prior to the event, organizers had a special moment planned that left some attendees with smiles. Katherine LaFourcade, the Executive Director of the French-American Chamber of Commerce Southeast, took to the stage to present the Award of Excellence to Virginie Durr from Delta Airlines. Durr has played a vital role in ensuring that U.S. veterans return to the historic shores of Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Omaha Beach landings during World War II.
This year marked Delta’s third year partnering with the Best Defense Foundation to bring veterans, many of whom proudly fought in the war and are now over 100 years old, back to their memory-laden battlegrounds. Durr acknowledged the numerous people pivotal to the project, credits which should be spread far and wide, including Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, outlining his true commitment to uplifting corporate values.
“He lives by those values. He made it possible for us to fly to my homeland of Normandy, and I’m incredibly grateful,” shared Durr during her acceptance speech. She further recognized the presence of Hilbert Margol from Dunwoody, who received France’s prestigious Legion of Honor from President Emmanuel Macron this year.
This heartwarming moment resonated deeply with many, including Bob Somers, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales. He expressed how witnessing those emotional ceremonies in Normandy would be a highlight for the rest of his life.
The event also featured other standout honorees, including Michelin, recognized for their Corporate Social Responsibility Award. Gleaning insights from Vice President David Chapman, attendees learned about Michelin’s sustainability efforts and their dedication to ensuring that when operational shifts occur, they are committed to supporting their workforce through training, education, and community engagement. “For every job lost, we strive to create three new ones,” Chapman noted with pride.
Boehringer Ingelheim, an animal health giant with operations in Athens, was celebrated with the VIE Commitment Award for their participation in the French International Internship Programme. Kathrin Carpenter, the Human Resources Director, explained how their commitment to nurturing young talent through internships has contributed significantly to their workforce.
The evening reached its peak with an inspiring keynote address from Dan Cnossen, a Navy Seal and Paralympic medalist, which further highlighted the event’s theme of resilience and honor. The power of giving back shone through as Delta and Air France generously donated airline tickets, leading to a swift $18,000 raised in a live auction—all for a noble cause.
As the event wrapped up, Jacques Marcotte, French-American Chamber President, reflected on the importance of these awards in nurturing the strong bonds between French and American businesses. The evening reinforced Atlanta’s thriving global identity while showcasing the substantial contribution of French investments, which account for nearly 10 percent of foreign employment in Georgia.
As the Crystal Peach Awards drew to a close, it marked a significant highlight in the France-Atlanta series, with only one event remaining: a La French Tech networking breakfast on November 1. The spirit of cooperation and celebration would undoubtedly continue to flourish, leaving attendees feeling hopeful and inspired.
