Tuscaloosa, Alabama – The excitement was palpable in the air as the Alabama Crimson Tide’s women’s basketball team celebrated a stunning victory over Georgia State, dominating the game with a remarkable 98-49 score. This achievement marks the team’s best start to a season in over two decades, with a record of 9-0, the first time reaching this milestone since the 2000-2001 season.
This particular game was not just about the players on the court; it was also a special day for many young fans who attended as part of the annual Fifth Grade Fast Break program. “I want to thank every administrator, every teacher, and all our promotions department for putting on an amazing event today,” said Alabama’s head coach, Kristy Curry. The initiative brought many local children to the Coleman Coliseum, where they experienced the thrill of college basketball for possibly the first time. “The educational opportunity for an experience like today is something they’ll always take away from,” added Curry, emphasizing the importance of this outreach effort.
Initially, Georgia State took an early lead, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. However, the Crimson Tide was quick to respond with an impressive 10-0 run, closing the first quarter with a narrow lead of 19-15. As the second quarter unfolded, Alabama started to find their rhythm, culminating in a commanding 23-point lead by halftime.
“I thought we played a really good 35 minutes of basketball,” Coach Curry reflected after the game. “I was not pleased with the first five, but loved our response after that.” The team certainly proved her right in the second half as they continued to build their lead, ultimately sealing a jaw-dropping 49-point victory.
Statistics from the game tell an impressive story, especially when it comes to rebounds and free throw efficiency. The Crimson Tide racked up a whopping 65 rebounds, marking the first game with over 60 rebounds since 2014. They showcased their prowess at the free-throw line, shooting an impressive 91% (21-23), compared to Georgia State’s struggles at 40% (9-22).
Two standout players of the night were Essence Cody and Zay Green, both of whom achieved double-doubles. Cody notched up 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Green topped the charts with 22 points and 10 rebounds. This marks the first instance this season where Alabama had multiple players finish with double-doubles in the same game, highlighting the team’s depth and talent.
As the Crimson Tide looks to build on this impressive record, they currently ride a 15-game non-conference winning streak, the second longest in the program’s history. The longest stretch dates back to the early 1990s when they won 17 consecutive games over two seasons in 1992 and 1993. The Tide eagerly awaits their next challenge, with hopes to extend their winning streak to 10-0 this Thursday as they travel to Cal-Berkley for a matchup set to tip-off at 8:00 PM on ESPNU.
For fans and the community, this season has already started with a bang. The energy in the arena, the smiles on young fans’ faces, and the dedication of the players and coaches make this season one to remember. As the journey continues, everyone is eagerly anticipating what’s next for the Crimson Tide.
