When it comes to community leadership, William Platt stands out like a shining star in Atlanta. This passionate entrepreneur, restaurateur, and all-around good guy grew up in the Herndon Homes housing projects and now dedicates his life to uplifting those in similar situations.
As he reflects on his childhood, Platt fondly recalls the difficult times, saying, “It was rough. I grew up really poor. We had nothing but our faith in God. My grandmother’s prayers helped our family through tough times.” With these roots firmly planted, Platt has made it his mission to give back to his community.
His commitment shines through in his initiative known as B.A.N.K., which stands for “Blessing All Neighborhood Kids.” Platt is not just talking; he’s doing. “We were all neighborhood kids at one point,” he explains. “I am just doing my part to let the kids in the inner city know I was once in their shoes.” His journey from hardship to success is proof that even the toughest struggles can lead to a brighter future with God leading the way.
Platt owns multiple businesses, including five restaurants in Atlanta, yet his heart is firmly rooted in community service. At his Bank location, which took 18 months to open due to COVID-19 delays, Platt has hosted some enormous events, like the “Banksgiving” turkey and food giveaway. This year’s event was a hit, accommodating over 2,000 people and distributing much more than just turkeys. “We give away everything,” Platt says. “There was a time when I was one of those kids in those lines and I had nothing. I know how hard it is.”
The Bank event center, which can hold up to 2,000 people, is more than just a building; it’s a community hub where families can come together for concerts, health screenings, and plenty of fun. Recently, names like Denzel Washington and Shaquille O’Neal graced the venue, showing that the community spirit also attracts the stars!
Platt doesn’t stop at restaurants. He has a construction company where he builds properties for famous artists like Future, Lil Baby, and Young Thug. He feels blessed to see his dreams come to fruition, emphasizing the need for community investment. “Everything that I own, I built myself from conception to completion,” he proudly states.
But what makes Platt such a community gem goes beyond his businesses. He’s heavily involved in social justice advocacy, notably amplifying George Floyd’s story in 2020. His actions have spurred essential conversations surrounding police reform and racial equality.
Platt acknowledges his influencers, like Dr. Bernice A. King and famed community leaders Scott and Mack Wilburn, whose words and actions inspire him to keep pushing forward. “For those leaders before us who paved the roads, we have to keep the torch going,” he explains passionately. This legacy spans beyond just business; it’s about creating a better life for future generations.
For everyone striving to chase their dreams, Platt shares his golden advice, saying, “Whatever you strive to be or set out to do, work on that goal. You can’t dodge work. You’ve got to go through pain and suffering to get to where you want to go. Always put God first.”
With his heart in the right place, William Platt continues to change lives, one act of kindness at a time. He’s not just a business mogul; he’s a beacon of hope for Atlanta’s youth, showing them they too can rise above their circumstances. And that’s what true community leadership is all about!
