Community Support Gathering

Columbus Community Comes Together to Support Future Leaders

Columbus, Georgia recently witnessed a heartwarming event, showcasing the strength of community and the power of education. On September 14, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Columbus Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College hosted its annual signature scholarship fundraising event at the elegant Green Island Country Club. This gathering wasn’t just a social affair; it was a collective effort to raise funds for the “Shades of the Blues Scholarship,” aimed specifically at helping Spelman College students hailing from Columbus and Phenix City.

A Closer Look at the Scholarship

For many college students, education comes with a hefty price tag. Between tuition, books, housing, and everyday expenses, financial stress can often overshadow the college experience. The Shades of the Blues Scholarship aims to lighten that burden, enabling students to shift their focus from monetary worries to their academic and career aspirations.

As the chapter’s president, Angel Chaney, eloquently put it, “We know that there is a need, a financial need for students. We hope that students are focusing on their careers and focusing on college instead of worrying about finances.” This scholarship is not just about financial aid; it’s about paving a smoother road for bright young women to thrive and grow into future leaders.

The Power of Community Involvement

The fundraising event was not just about raising money; it was a call to action for the entire Columbus community. Sherrie Gilbert, the President Elect of the chapter, emphasized the importance of community support: “We invite others in the community to contribute to those scholarships. These are women who want to go and change the world, and it takes a community in order to support that.” This sentiment resonated strongly throughout the evening, as attendees were reminded that investing in education is an investment in the future.

A Night to Remember

The event was brought to life with a vibrant atmosphere filled with laughter, networking, and shared goals. Local alumna, Randi Akins-Warren, who attended the event, shared her heartfelt feelings about giving back to her alma mater: “To see everyone coming out, to support, and to know the impact that Spelman women have on the community and on the world on a global scale is an awesome honor.” Moments like these remind us of the profound influence that education can have, not just on individuals, but on the fabric of society as a whole.
