In a disquieting announcement, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta officials confirmed a severe increase in fatal child drowning cases in 2024. This spike is found to be 300% more than the number of cases recorded last year, and alarmingly, is affecting older children than norm, stretching into the high school demographic.
Drowning is the leading cause of death among children aged 1-4, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, Amanda Batlle, Manager of Injury and Illness Prevention at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, reveals that the age trend is unexpectedly surging this year.
“What we have seen this year is that trending a little bit older – the elementary age and even high school age kids-which is atypical for us”
The surge in drowning cases has been significantly influenced by the absence or lack of appropriate supervision, particularly in scenarios where older children are involved.
The healthcare provider has recorded four fatal drownings in its hospitals this year, marking a gross 300% increase compared to last year. This time in the previous year, their hospitals had only registered a single drowning case. Although Batlle was unable to furnish all the details, largely due to privacy reasons, she stated that the tragic incidences occurred in variable environments ranging from swimming pools to lakes and oceans. Some non-fatal cases are also reported in bathtubs and backyard kiddie pools.
In preventing or reducing such incidents, it is recommended that constant supervision be practiced. Additionally, group swimming is another recommended preventive measure for older children.
“Then we also think about older kids…doesn’t mean that every parent has to go and watch their 16- and 17-year-old, but thinking about swimming in groups. Things can happen, and we want to make sure we have somebody there.”
Besides supervision, surrounding bodies of water with barriers like fences, engaging children in swimming lessons, wearing life jackets, and learning CPR can play a pivotal role in preventing drowning.
“This is where it can be really important too for our older kids who sometimes think they’re invincible. Sometimes we overestimate our abilities in the water. If we’re out swimming in the lake or in the pools it can get really hard really fast and we don’t know that we’re tired.”
It is crucial to increase awareness and vigilance as the trend in fatal drowning cases among children continues to rise. It can only be hoped that the measures discussed become common practices, ensuring that children can enjoy water activities without the risk of a tragic outcome.
