Excitement is in the air in Singapore as Chick-fil-A, beloved for its signature chicken sandwiches, takes the plunge into the Asian market. The popular Atlanta-based chicken chain is gearing up to open its first restaurant in Singapore in 2025, which will serve as its launchpad into Southeast Asia.
This opening is part of a broader strategy that Chick-fil-A has in place: a ten-year, $75 million investment planned for the city-state. With Singapore being a culinary hotspot—a melting pot of delicious foods and flavors—the company sees this as a golden opportunity to further its global presence.
Chick-fil-A isn’t slowing down its momentum in the U.S., where it currently ranks as the third-largest quick-service restaurant in sales, generating a whopping $21.6 billion across its 3,000-plus locations this year. But now, the Cathy family, who still own the privately held chain, is looking beyond borders. Since 2016, they’ve been contemplating international markets that could help facilitate growth, especially as many competitors have successfully ventured overseas.
According to Anita Costello, the chief international officer at Chick-fil-A, “The profound love that Singaporeans have for food as well as the city’s strategic position as a gateway to the Asian market make it the ideal choice for Chick-fil-A’s first permanent restaurant in the region.” And it seems Singaporeans are just as excited! The company held a pop-up event earlier this June, which turned out to be a massive hit. Within just 90 minutes, all 600 tickets were reserved, and over three days, 1,000 attendees tasted the iconic chicken sandwich, sparking enthusiasm for what’s to come.
The pop-up was smooth sailing, unlike the struggles faced by other brands trying to navigate the local food scene. Chick-fil-A also found a way to give back during the event, raising 30,000 Singapore dollars (around $22,800) for the Community Chest, a local charity, through suggested donations. Showing a commitment to community involvement, the chain aims to empower local owner-operators, which is a key aspect of their business model. They will set up a dedicated website for recruiting applicants, aiming to attract individuals who are passionate about bringing quality food to their neighborhoods.
For those dreaming of Chick-fil-A’s delightful offerings in Singapore, here’s what you can look forward to: the company plans to replicate its successful owner-operator model that it has utilized in the U.S. This means that local owners will have the chance to manage their stores, rather than the brand using a franchise system with strict rules about the number of locations. In fact, about 80% of Chick-fil-A’s operators own just one store, which allows them to be deeply involved in their communities while also prioritizing guest service and quality food.
As Chick-fil-A prepares for their foray into Singapore, the company is also making strides in the United Kingdom, where they have similar expansion plans. The UK is set to receive its first store in early 2024, contributing to a total job creation of 400 positions across five planned locations.
With all these exciting developments in the pipeline, it’s undeniable that Chick-fil-A is on a quest to share its homestyle hospitality and delicious food with the world, starting with the vibrant city of Singapore. So, mark your calendars for 2025 and get ready to enjoy those famous chicken sandwiches closer to home!
