Atlanta, Georgia – After a special board meeting on Tuesday, Dr. Bryan Johnson has been officially approved to lead Atlanta Public Schools (APS) as the new superintendent. The announcement comes with a 3-year term starting on August 5, following the Atlanta Board of Education’s unanimous decision to appoint him.

Community Divided Over Decision

The appointment of Dr. Johnson has triggered mixed reactions within the community. Some voiced their disappointment, advocating for the retention of the current superintendent, Dr. Danielle S. Battle. One community member, Wykeisha Howe, urged the board to reconsider Dr. Battle’s contract, stating, “I ask you guys to go and revisit Dr. Battle’s contract and ask her to stay. Matter of fact, beg her to stay. Unfortunately, I think this young man may not understand Atlanta and where we are.”

On the other hand, supporters of Dr. Johnson expressed confidence in his leadership abilities. Alan Lee, another community member, emphasized Dr. Johnson’s statement about being a man first and superintendent second, indicating that he is attuned to the needs of the district.

Dr. Johnson’s Background

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Bryan Johnson served as the superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. He departed from this role in 2021 to venture into the corporate sector, taking on a position at US Xpress, a Chattanooga-based trucking company. Subsequently, he assumed the role of former executive vice chancellor and chief strategy officer at UTC.

Under Georgia law, a waiting period of 14 days is mandatory before the board can conduct a vote to formally hire Dr. Johnson. In the interim, Dr. Danielle S. Battle will continue to serve as the interim superintendent for APS.

Previous Recognitions for Dr. Johnson

Dr. Bryan Johnson’s dedication and accomplishments have garnered national recognition in the past. In 2021, he was named a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents Association, positioning him among the top four superintendents in the country.

Moreover, Dr. Johnson was honored as the Southeast Tennessee Superintendent of the Year in a separate accolade by TOSS, highlighting his exemplary leadership within the education sector.

Transition to Atlanta Public Schools

The transition of Dr. Johnson to lead APS marks a significant chapter in his professional journey. His experience in education, coupled with a brief stint in the corporate world, equips him with a unique perspective that could benefit the Atlanta community.

As Dr. Johnson gears up to assume his new role, the Atlanta Board of Education and stakeholders anticipate a positive trajectory under his leadership.
